August18: Time is Short

Not to worry. Oil chiefs and their expert premiers - as in Alberta and Ontario - have told us nothing is happening.  So there.

Israel has agreed to stop murdering Palestinians and stealing their land?  Of course not.

This might sound like a joke. It isn't. All that plastic is devastating to marine life - and, oh, we need that marine life.

Kushner really did say that. I watched it on TV. He also slipped in Trump's claim that China deliberately caused all this. Why on earth is such a twit in a position of power? It's clear he doeson't have a brain in his little head. Well, it's because he's very rich. And he's married to the president's daughter.

And that is what gives him the right. among other things, to engineer the destruction of the people of Palestine.

So much for democracy.

It is possible - even likely - that the U.S. empire is finished. And it's not just Trump. The world rejection of U.S. leadership has been developing for at least fifty years.

This one came to me as a great disappointment.  Much as I liked Hong Kong, I was astonished by it's lack of social services, of meeting the needs of a very large part of the population of Hong Kong. Alas! I also saw that the leadership of Hong Kong was viciously self-serving. I don't see Hong Kong getting the changes it needs from either Hong Kong or China.

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/55471.htm

While I was there, in the days of British rule, I was struck by the arrogance and the indifference to human needs of the British rulers. A key figure in this was the chief advisor to the British governor, a stunningly arrogant type that only the British empire could produce, a man with nothing but contempt for the people of Hong Kong.

Alas! A year later I learned we were related. He was married to my American cousin.

This will be very true in the U.S. - and in Canada. Education is a process that requires a sense of place, a sense of relationship with teachers and other children. But none of that is going to work with periods of separation, of moves, of learning from computers.

It won't be such a problem for universities, but only because professors commonly have no training in education and no understanding even of the concept  and, therefore, will make only  their usual mess of it.

Again, I've been finding that our news media, including the few that are pretty good, are not getting to the heart of our crisis. Voting Republican,Democrat, Liberal, or Conservative will change nothing. The problem is one that began many, many thousands of years ago with the emergence of humans. Unlike most animals, we consistently gave rise to greed, the greed that knows no bounds.

Such people became leaders of tribes, then of nations with titles of Kings, Emperors, Lords.... From the start, they thought only of themselves as they crushed other humans into poverty. So it was that a very tiny number of people could conquer and plunder most of the world - as the British Empire did.

The vast majority of the British remained in poverty so deep, that they only in the last century or so could even hope for basic necessities. This, not suprisingly, was adopted by American leaders who murdered and plundered from the earliest days of European settlement in North America.

For the last century and a half, we have called this capitalism. But it's really the same old greed and bullying. And so today, as millions of Americans are turned into the streets to starve and die. Today, 3 Americans, just three, have a combined wealth of at least a TRILLION dollars. But the American people see nothing of that just as millions of British never saw the luxury and privilege that  their Kings, Queens and Lords lived in.

The only role most of us are permitted to have is to kill and plunder North Koreans, people of Afghanistan, Latins who get uppity, the people once known as French Indo-China (Vietnam), our own native peoples, middle east... We kill on the command of our super - rich. And the major western countries have been at war constantly since 1914. And all those wars are really the same war, the great war to smother the super-rich in even greater wealth.

Yes. We have such people in Canada, too. Not the richest perhaps, but right up there with the super greedy, is the Irving family of New Brunswick, a family that pays virtually no taxes, that owns all the newspapers in province, that has owned every government there for almost  a century, and demands and gets many millions of dollars of tax-payers money.

Our North American greedy might be coming to the end of their rope. It is quite possible the US itself is crashing, and will cease to be a nation. But it's also possible the American super-rich - with the help of Canadian super-rich - will annex Canada for a final fling. (Even as it is, prime minister Trudeau is simply an American puppet.)

Capitalism? Forget it. Capitalism has nothing to do with this. It is simply the very old, very human trait of super greed. The difference is that what we call capitalism has also led to the massive destruction of our environment.

And that will take us to the final act.

There is money out there, lots of it. But we just sit here twiddling our thumbs. This is not just a question of pushing a few political buttons. It's about our quivering, cowering response to the massive threat that for thousands of years has been the great threat to all humanity. It the capacity of the human family for greed.
