The creators of Facebook  have been threatening to monitor its social media sites (like this one) and to destroy those that are irresponsible. (As they would surely think this one is.) The Donald Trumps of this world are in complete agreement because, as we all know, The Donald Trumps of this world are never, ever, ever untruthful.)

Whoops! I just remembered. The producers of the Post newspapers in Canada are among the worst liars and propagandists in Canada. (That includes the Montreal Gazette which used to be - sort of -honest.) Then we have the chains like Irving newspapers in New Brunswick which cater to readers of low, low entelligence and stunning ignorance. In fact, in both Canada and the US our commercial press is and always has been lying and propagndist. That began way back over a hundred years when the Hearst papers ran big stories about how the cruel Spanish in Cuba sank a sweet and harmless American ship.

In fact, that American ship blew up because it's captain never cleaned it. No matter. Out of that, the U.S. grabbed  Guantanamo as a base, and kicked out the government of Cuba to install a series of murderous dictators

That's why such papers publish opinions from "think tanks" that they know are simply propaganda mouthpieces for their owners and the wealthy in general.

The only honest newspaper in the English-speaking world that I know of is Israel's Haaretz. However, a British paper, The Guardian, still has some of the honesty it started with.

The only reason we have blogs on the web is because our commercial news is so corrupt. Even the CBC, one of the world's best news services, gets interfered with by people in government. Many years ago, I was fired from CBC because I was on the executive of  the English rights group in Quebec. The show I was on had nothing to do wiith politics. But CBC had separatists in its management. They didn't likeme. And they insisted I be fired.

Are the blogs always correct? Of course not. Some are naive. Some are dishonest. Some are good. On balance, they come out ahead ahead of our commercial news. (Of course. It wouldn't be possible to come out worse.)

So why threaten to shut down the social media but not the commercial news media? Because that's the sort of thing that the Hitlers and Mussolini of this world have alway done. And don't kid yourself. We have lots of our own Hitlers and Mussolinis - and Stalins.

What's wrong with this one?

For openers, the Fraser Institute is a propaganda agency for the very wealthy. And they would dearly love to see all education privatized to produce profits for them. They plant stories like this all the time - and most news media run them as big stories.

Are private schools better? In some ways. First, they have smaller classes. But if we had smaller classes in out public schools, they would be better, too. It's not being private that makes schools better. It's smaller classes.
Then there's the fact that this report is inompetent.

The article says public schools  with large working class populations do badly. Duh - yeah. But that has nothing to do with the quality of the schools and everything to do with the effect of poverty. I know this because I was one of those 'poverty' kids.

We were raised to have no expectations. So we had none. Our parents had none. When I was kicked out in grade 11, I was celebrated as a success story for my neighbourhood. We had no expectations. Our parents had none. Of course, we did badly. Governments made it worse by cutting funding for the public schools, and overloading classes - while subsdizing the private schools.

Are private school teachers better teachers? No. I went to teachers'   college with them. They were just like the rest of us. But they would go on to teach children who had grown up with the expectations that poor kids never had. And they had the luxury of smaller classes.

In French Quebec in particular, the Trudeaus and thei social circle always had private schools with small classes and high expectations. The rest of the French kids?         They got stuck in terribly underfunded public schools.

What's the real point of this story in the Gazette? 1.It encourages contempt for the public schools. 2.It encourages the attack on public schooling. 3.It encourages more and more education - for private profit. 4. And it encourages public spending for the profit of private school owners.

Beware of 'think tanks'. Almost all of them are propaganda houses. And all of them are welcomed in the pages of our propaganda newspapers.

The organization holds huge conferences. (But you aren't invited.) And the conferences are super   secret. And so we have a US government that wants to imprison an Asssange who did nothing illegal -  but which also has leaders  who think that destroying democracy would be a great idea.

And it's all very, very secret - which is why you won't see any report of it in your newspapers. Yep. An Assange who tells the truth faces prison. But our political leaders who want to hand over us and all our rights to the greediest people in the world - well - that's our kinda folks.

May 28: Hitler in Canada

When Hitler won power in Germany, he didn't do it on programs or policies. He did it on hatred,, in this case a hatred of Jews. He  invented Jews into a hatred with his campaign speeches. It was all nonsense. But it worked.

When Donald Trump came to power, he did it on a hatred. In his case, the hatred was immigrants, especially Latin Americans, and he roused his followers with tales of how child migrants would grow up to murder loyal Americans in their beds, and would spread drugs over the U.S.

Increasingly, Hitler is the model of modern politicians. the politics of hatred. It's been true in the recent European elections.  It's been true in the election of Trump - and in the provincial elections of Ford and Kenney.

Often, these politicians can count on the support of the commercial news media. Of course. Most of those news media are owned by the very wealthy people who own the politicians. Hatred works for them. It gives support to their lies/

Do the commercial news media lie? You bet they do. They always have. In Canada, the first news media in Montreal were owned by those business leaders who lived by British trade  their reporting reflected that. Toronto business was more interested in western expansion - and their papers reflected it.

The wealthy owned the news media - and that means the media reflected the interests of the wealthy. And today, that is more the case than ever.  Our commercial news media are owned by the same people who finance the politicians. That's why you will rarely see articles in The National Post critical of big business. And how often have you read stories about how the wealthy don't pay income tax -and they wallow in our tax money that governments hand out to them (without telling us.)

That's why the British Empire at its peak had monstrous wealth in the hands of very few people while millions of their workers lives in the foulest slums of Europe and while working class children worked12 hours and more a day for pennies at the age of six.

Our commercial news media lie. They lie constantly to serve their masters. And this has really exploded since 1945 as most of the money has been drifting from the poor to the rich.

And how often have you seen commercial news media that report that? Now. what we see mostly is trivia, lies, and propaganda. And that is the meat of our elections. And this is why elections are largely reported as coping with evil (any country that wanst to control it's own affairs, any country we have impoverished (like Venezuela or Iran or Iraq....)

We, most of us, are back in the politics of Adolph Hitler. And our commercial news media play a major role in keeping us there as we starve children by the tens of thousands al all over the world - as in Venezuela and Yemen - and it's all their fault - yeah. And so we become the ones who pay big money to crooked politicians (who pass on much of it to crooked editors.

Now, the attack is on what are called social media - news opinions like this one, only most of them better. These have to be destroyed. And that explains the news story at the top of this, in which friends of the rich say we should forbid columns like this one - social media.

In fact the operators and the owners and the operators of commercial news media are pretty much the scum of the earth. And they intend to be the only ones allowed to have opinions. Watch Kenney's Alberta as a leader in the move.

I remember, as a child in WW2 years, seeing the slogan that we were fighting for freedom of speech. But we are dangerously close to a world in which freedom of speech is denied to all but very rich liars.

(Yes. I know some social media writers are bad news.But that's for us to decide, and not to be decided by viciously greedy liars -(fill in  names like Trump, Ford, Jason Kenney, etc. And remember that if we approve a world in which only these people can express opinion,, we are in terminal trouble.

We steadily increase poverty all over the world, including in our home countries so that more and more money can be stuffed into the pockets of a small number of people who already have more money than they could spend in a thousand lifetimes.

We elect politicians of no scientific training whatever who decide that the greatest disaster ever to strike this earth should kill us all to make billionaires richer.

We murder all over the world. We murder in the millions. We murder children. We murder babies. And we call it heroism. We destroy whole nations, creating millions of refugees - not just in warring nations but inside the American empire just as we did in the old British Empire. And when the survivors flee for their lives, we let some settle in misery; we let uncounted numbers die as they try to cross oceans in their terror. And we, the ones who created their misery, blame them for it - as Trump is doing at the U.S. border. We are destroying them. We are destroying ourselves.

And over it all, we see the intellectual rubble which is much of all that is left of 2,000 years of Christianity.

In the U.S., Trump is the model of ignorance and greed and hate. And in Canada, Justin Trudeau is Trump's wimp. The Conservatives are, of course, even worse. But there is little sign that either Liberal or Conservative voters have woken up from their stupor of 150 years.

I'm sorry to be so depressing. But it's painful to live in a world so dominated by its ignorance, greed,and sheer stupidity.

Assange, whatever his faults might be did what a journalist is supposed to do in a democracy. He informs us. But the politicians and the military don't want us to know what they're doing. And because they didn't want us to know, Canadians and Americans died in places like Afghanistan and Korea.

Assange is not the enemy of the people. The enemies are governments, military bosses and, of course, corrupting capitalists. That's why government, big business, and the military have worked so hard to make us to see only personal faults that he might (or might not) have.

One of the great  advances in human history was the development of the public school in the 19th century. For the first time, the poorest had a the same chance as the rich.

Of course, the ruling class couldn't accept that. So they used their power to make sure the classes were overloaded - and the children were hidden from any learning that might given them silly ideas about being just as good as the rich.

This still goes on. Premier Ford of Ontario is making  the classes too  crowded for anybody to learn anything. (When I became a teacher for six years, I learned how seriously we were restricted.Then, as a prof, I realized how history was used to stay away from reality and teach propaganda.) (The universities were even worse.For all the handicaps they dealt with, school teachers knew how to teach. Professors, for the greater part, don't have a clue.

Just to make sure poor kids don't start thinking "above their station" - and to make personal profits out of the system, the U.S. permitted the spread of Charter (privately owned) schools. So much for the end of 200 years of public education. The keeps  the poor in their proper place and, without doing anything for rich kids, it sets them up to move in the best circles,

In terms of democracy and opportunity, this sets the U.S. back at least a century.

I  have not written much with the entries for this edition of the blog. The reason is that I am overwhelmed by the dangers (and disasters) of what we are doing - and it had become impossible to keep up with the murder and greed.

The time to design a new world was 1945. But we didn't do it. We allowed the same old gang of the greedy and not very intelligent create the world that THEY wanted. The plundered all of humanity for themselves. Their greed has no limits. They give nothing. The don't pay taxes.They don't share the world''s wealth. They murder on a world scale.

We are watching a steady decline in real income for almost all of us. We are watching mass hunger and homelessness even in rich countries. We daily watch the mass murder of children and civilians (by people we call heroes).

Our economic bosses are the ones who prosper and prosper wildly in the billions of dollars while most people in this world can't get basic medical care or, even in North America, decent education for the bulk of the population.

Most of our news media - owned by the very wealthy - lie constantly - even some of the 'great' ones.

We ignore hunger, sickness, poverty all so we can pour what should be money for all us into the pockets of the unspeakably greedy. Many (most of us) die sooner than we should. Almost all of us live more miserably than we should.

At the end of world war 2, we should have created governments that worked for us. Instead, we have have thrown money at the greediest bastards this world has ever seen. And they ARE our governments. The own our governments. And owe they are murderous and - frankly, they don't care who they murder - civilians, children (Do you seriously think  the babies of Yemen are evil? The millions of children who were killed in Korea?...)

Before they finish, they will scrape us all to the bone - and that will happen in the lifetimes of today's children. Compared to these people, Hitler was at least okay. These people  have no nationality. They have no patriotism. They have only greed. It is very likely that they will destroy all human life - and soon. Because they[re not just greedy and murderous but because they are stupid. Can you seriously believe an Irving family will ever stop plundering and impoverishing the people of New Brunswick?  Will Doug Ford of Ontario ever do anything but throw money at the already rich? Will Jason Kenney of Alberta ever to anything but look for oil billionaires with their pants down so he can kiss them?

And our time might be getting short - very, very short.

Sixty years ago, Canada had a political party that could be defined as religious. Clergy Ware prominent in it, and it was genuinely focused on the needs of all Canadians - not just the billionaires. These were, I guess, the last years when the Christian churches were still Christian. This was the party that brought medicare to Canada.

But, alas, it costs lots of money to sustain a political party - and ordinary people don't have that much money. So the CCF had to find a way to get some. And it most certainly was never going to get money from the very wealthy.

So the CCF became a partner with the labour unions, and became the CCF.

Alas! The labour unions didn't give much of a damn about all people in general. And many of the Christian  principals that had driven the CCF disappeared - and the NDP became - pretty bland stuff. That's why it is getting pushed around now by the likes of The Greens.

And that's very nice. But The Greens and other parties have a very narrow view of what we need. And their view down not have much sense of what human needs are.

Mind you, I don't think we should have a party based solely on Christian principles. Almost all religions   (despite their crackpot outshoots) are based on meeting human needs. And right now we don't have any party based on human needs. (The Greens are a good step to what we need - but that step    doesn't go nearly far enough.)

That's why the Liberals and the Conservatives   (both of whom don't give a damn about human needs, and both of whom are owned by the greediest and least principled people among us) still dominate.

We need a party based on principles. Those principles are to be found not just in Christianity but in virtually all religions. Understanding that can draw us together and end our suffering under the billionaire parties.

Many, many (most) commercial newspapers lie. That's not new. It was true in the earliest days, just over a hundred years ago  when American newspapers lied that an American warship was torpedoed in Havana harbour - a lit that set up the American invasion of Cuba.

Almost all of them lie almost all the time. My daily paper in New Brunswick was and is owned by a billionaire oil pedlar. So the paper frequently had stories about how oil is good for you. It also routinely carried stories from the so-called "think tanks" like the Fraser Institute. (Almost all of these a propaganda houses.)

My New Brunswick paper also routinely carried major columns (all propaganda) about how good big business is to us. I might add that the sleazes who wrote these columns were frequently university professors. There aren't many professors sleazy enough to do this - but they do exist.

Perhaps the most contemptible in Canada (after the Irving papers of New Brunswick) is The National Post - a Toronto paper founded by Conrad Black, a Toronto publisher given to long rants of his stone age opinions. (Black is the man who spent three and a half (deserved) years in a rich man's prison for fraud. He was recently given a pardon by Trump (for kissing Trump's rear end.)

The National Post remains one of Canada's most contemptible newspapers - but, oh, it has company.

Pre school and then public school can be crucial stages in a child's life. They can make the child. Or they can trap the child.

I remember well my first grade class. This was in a very, very poor district. And not one of them finished high school

Well, what the hell...we were poor. Nobody, including our parents expected us finish school. I still remember the day I was kicked out in grade 11. My parents thought nothing of it. Our family had always been poor. And we always would be. As for my friends, most of them dropped out in grade 9.

We weren't stupid. But nobody expected anything of us - including us.

Schooling needs to start with expectations that we can do well. It needs to start early. It needs small classes.

The U.S. solution? Create private schools for rich kids -small classes, families with high expectations. Dump the rest in overcrowded class rooms (which is what Ontario premier Ford is doing.

The only exceptions I saw to this were Jewish kids. Their parents had ambitions for them, hopes, encouragement - and it paid off. For years in Montreal, the highest grades in final high school exams were those of Jewish children.

Anyway,  that wasn't me. And I remember on my first job in a filthy and low pay factory standing in a doorway, looking out a door into the filth of a lane and thinking, "This is it. This is  the rest of my life."

Somehow, and without ever finishing high school, I got a PhD - and a life I would never have dreamed of.  But that was luck,  pure luck.

We need public schools - for everybody. We need smaller classes. (The lout that we call the premier of Ontario is now doing what public schools all over North American are doing - overtuffing classes to save the tax money of the very rich, subsidizing the privvate schools of the rich......

A war in Iran is unjustified.  Much, much worse, this could drag in the whole region - and Russia and China. And the man pushing for it is John Bolton, a man with a long history of lusting for wars. And he seems to be running the show, with Trump piping up now and then.

Saudi Arabia wants the war because of it's hatred of Iranian Muslims because they diverge from the Saudi ones. Israel wants a piece of Iran just like it wants  all of Palestine. The U.S. - wants its beloved oil barons to control Iranian oil - just as it wants the oil of Venezuela and of the North Pole.

There are no limits to the greed of the American oil  industry - no matter how many it kills, starves to death....and Israel has that same quality.

Will Canada support such as war?  You bet it will just like it has supported the U.S. in starving Venezuela's children to death.

And the American Christian churches? They never saw a murderous capitalist they didn't like - just like the Christian churches of Britain in its imperial days. Indeed, in 2,000 years,  the Christian Churches blessed just about every plundering, murderous gang that came down the road.

And John Bolton? He seems  to be running the show. And he has a long, long record, quite an insane one, as an advocate of extreme killing and torture.

This is the most dangerous war we have seen since  1945 - and it's quite likely, if it happens - if being the worst war this world has ever seen.

None of the above is an exaggeration. And many a Christian clergyman over these 2000 years has blessed the swords and spears and machine guns and bombs of armies.

To understand the following story, it helps to know something about Conrad Black, who was the founder of The National Post, one of this world's most dishonest newspapers, a propaganda sheet for Black. I had some acquaintance of him years ago. We both appeared on the same radio station (CBC), he before me. We occasionally talked to kill time.

Black never really listened. In reply, he would point his chin up, close his eyes,  and recite a long argument. I later realized he always did that because he so much likes listening to his own voice. This is a man of enormous ego.

He spent three and a half years in an American prison for fraud. But weep not. It was a prison largely for rich criminals. He says he committed no crimes. Nonsense. There is a   video showing him committing them. It was on TV news.

And now, Trump has pardoned him.  Why?

In an earlier blog, I expressed surprise that John Bolton and Pompeo had been the ones to inform reporters that they had sent American warships to Iran. This wasn't a declaration of war - but it was just an inch from it. I have never heard such a statement coming from anyone but the leader of a country.

Now, I have leaned since then that even Trump didn't know this was coming.

Amazingly, Trump has reacted only in quiet announcement. And this is dangerous.

The president has been pushed aside and, possibly, has created a war without even bothering to tell the president. Even in a weak government this is so dangerous that those men should be have been fired and, possibly, jailed. But nothing happened. Their highly dangerous instruction is still in effect. The president has been tossed aside. Debate has been tossed aside. Military advice has been ignored.

Quite apart from the danger that this creates of war in Iran - a war that Russia and China probably cannot ignore - the President of the U.S.  has been trashed. And this is very, very dangerous indeed. Dangerous for Iran, dangerous for the U.S., dangerous for Russia and China, dangerous for the whole region, dangerous  for the world.

It's not just that Bolton and Pompeo are insane killers. This well could create a crisis in the whole structure of U.S. government. The news media seem not to have noticed this.

Well, of course not.
