August 8: Our very dangerous tomorrows

Sorry. My computer crashed in a big (and expensive) way for the past week.

I must also warn you that much of today's news is profoundly depressing.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/aug/07/canadian-ice-shelf-area-bigger-than-manhattan-collapses-due-to-rising-temperatures

Not to worry. If this were really happening, the premiers of Alberta and Ontario would have told us. Oh, and New Brunswick too. (New Brunswick's Irving family has a big stake in oil. But, luckily, New Brunswickers are spared reality  since the province's government and newspapers are stage puppets for the Irvings.)

Covid is a temporary problem. A far, far bigger one is the destruction of our atmosphere, the rise of our oceans, the destruction of our farm lands- all topped off by the unlimited greed of our super rich. Funny how most of that hardly makes the news at all.______________________________________________________________

No, Canada and the U.S. are not better than other nations in this respect. We face quite a number of threats - And all of them are sustained by "the free market wolves".

You're not likely to find this story in your local newspaper.

Read all of this one to get a sense of the very dangerous path Tump is following.

American democracy - never very democratic - could suffer a death blow on this one.

Doug Ford appears several times a day every day with a background of two flags, and two flunkies. And so he tells us about the wonderful things he's doing.

Alas!

Ford has a long record of being a flunky for the very rich, and a long record of serving those rich who don't give a damn about the environmental crisis or the destruction of nature in this province.

Like - who gives a damn? Go to UTube. Take a look at all the families on skid row in Los Angeles. Some are living in tents on the sidewalks. Others, including children, just lie in the open on the sidewalks.

As far back as we know, homo sapiens has been creature marked by it's obsession with power over other creatures of it's own kind. Yes, you will find other creatures with such a characteristic - but in nothing like the obsession of homo sapiens. Male lions might have moments of power in, for example, who gets first choice on the meat of a kill. But other creatures do not have any power resembling the power of leadership and dominance that humans have over their own kind.

The earliest human rulers that we know of lived in the obedience of the large numbers of their kind that they ruled over. That is a marked characteristic of every human society we know of. The upper classes of Rome lived on the plundering of most Romans as much as on the plundering of their conquests. The British Empire was, like the American one is,  controlled by a tiny group of the upper classes who used the lower classes to murder and plunder all over the world.

(Notably, women are rare, very rare, in this chain command.)

Usually, this power of homo sapiens, is restricted to males for reasons that are not clear. Greater intelligence is not usually a characteristic of these ruling males. Look at Donald Trump and, probably, most American presidents, at George Biden, a high proportion of the kings of England, many of the emperors of China....

The poor are poor not because they are stupid but because their environment from childhood encourages them to have a low opinion of themselves. And the very rich are rich because their environment from childhood encourages them to have a high opinion of themselves - and to have the privileges and connections to make themselves rich.

And now the super rich have the ultimate power to turn loose the most destructive  weapons in history.
