Well, it's a nice thought. And I quite agree that Chinese universities should be more honest. But how do we do it? We can't simply force China to liberate it's universities - unless, of course, we invaded. And that would be the biggest war in history.
I also suggest we take a look at our universities to see how they do on being broad-minded about teaching the faults of capitalism in their Business programmes. Indeed, most of our universities are very much under the control of big business, and big business makes sure they don't stray.
Some years ago, I was invited to a meeting hosted by the very wealthy chairman of my university's board of governors. (Most of them were also wealthy or friends of the very wealthy.) I had no warning of what the meeting was about, and was dazzled by the offer of becoming president of the university.
Oh, the goodies were wonderful - my house paid for, a very big salary....
But I wondered why they were so keen on me. I had no administrative training or experience. But it gradually dawned on me. All they wanted was a president who would do whatever the businessmen on the board told me to do.
So I turned it down. However, I later learned that many universities operate that way - with all control and decisions in the hands of big business- and with the appointment of presidents who will be patsies.

Canadians and American do a lousy job on education. In particular, they do a lousy job in public education. That's not because of bad teaching. It's because rich people divert a good deal of education into their private schools, and are very, very reluctant to pay for public schools. (Oh, the private schools also get lots of funding from governments who really, really like rich people.)
I remember my first year as a student in Grade 1. The class was too large for that grade or for the ones that would follow. Result? Only one, a girl, made it to university. The rest, including me, flunked out, starting about grade 4.
My first teaching job was with a grade 7 class of 32. Far, far too many for any class.
But, hey, kids who were low on brains but whose parents had money could attend classes that were small and with lots of teacher attention.

A final note --- what is the future of Alberta?
Well, the oil industry in that province is doomed. Leading companies are moving out to the U.S. Very soon, Alberta will be a dead land of filthy and poisonous oil fields.
And no, the oil barons will not clean up. That will be the job of at least a generation of Albertans, maybe more. And the oil companies will not pay for it. The many, many billions of dollars that will cost will have to come from Canadian taxpayers.
It's not Canada that is destroying the industry. It's the oil companies that are laying workers off. And it's the oil industry that will, in the not too distant future, destroy the province.
The oil barons aren't stupid. (If they want stupidity, they can always turn to the United Conservative Party). The oil barons know the threat that oil poses to all humanity in this world. What they want is to keep oil alive for as long as possible - even if that risks destroying all of us.
So what they do is to buy off Alberta newspapers and Conservatives. And all those Albertans who worship the industry will bleat like sheep on the way to the slaughterhouse.

Of course there are migrants, many of them victims of wars we have created.
Many of them victims of climate change that is destroying their food supply. Many of them are victims of crises we have created (like the Latin Americans at the U.S. border.)

Well, it's a nice thought. And I quite agree that Chinese universities should be more honest. But how do we do it? We can't simply force China to liberate it's universities - unless, of course, we invaded. And that would be the biggest war in history.
I also suggest we take a look at our universities to see how they do on being broad-minded about teaching the faults of capitalism in their Business programmes. Indeed, most of our universities are very much under the control of big business, and big business makes sure they don't stray.
Some years ago, I was invited to a meeting hosted by the very wealthy chairman of my university's board of governors. (Most of them were also wealthy or friends of the very wealthy.) I had no warning of what the meeting was about, and was dazzled by the offer of becoming president of the university.
Oh, the goodies were wonderful - my house paid for, a very big salary....
But I wondered why they were so keen on me. I had no administrative training or experience. But it gradually dawned on me. All they wanted was a president who would do whatever the businessmen on the board told me to do.
So I turned it down. However, I later learned that many universities operate that way - with all control and decisions in the hands of big business- and with the appointment of presidents who will be patsies.

Canadians and American do a lousy job on education. In particular, they do a lousy job in public education. That's not because of bad teaching. It's because rich people divert a good deal of education into their private schools, and are very, very reluctant to pay for public schools. (Oh, the private schools also get lots of funding from governments who really, really like rich people.)
I remember my first year as a student in Grade 1. The class was too large for that grade or for the ones that would follow. Result? Only one, a girl, made it to university. The rest, including me, flunked out, starting about grade 4.
My first teaching job was with a grade 7 class of 32. Far, far too many for any class.
But, hey, kids who were low on brains but whose parents had money could attend classes that were small and with lots of teacher attention.

A final note --- what is the future of Alberta?
Well, the oil industry in that province is doomed. Leading companies are moving out to the U.S. Very soon, Alberta will be a dead land of filthy and poisonous oil fields.
And no, the oil barons will not clean up. That will be the job of at least a generation of Albertans, maybe more. And the oil companies will not pay for it. The many, many billions of dollars that will cost will have to come from Canadian taxpayers.
It's not Canada that is destroying the industry. It's the oil companies that are laying workers off. And it's the oil industry that will, in the not too distant future, destroy the province.
The oil barons aren't stupid. (If they want stupidity, they can always turn to the United Conservative Party). The oil barons know the threat that oil poses to all humanity in this world. What they want is to keep oil alive for as long as possible - even if that risks destroying all of us.
So what they do is to buy off Alberta newspapers and Conservatives. And all those Albertans who worship the industry will bleat like sheep on the way to the slaughterhouse.
It's not Canada that threatens Alberta. It's the Albertans who threaten themselves - and all of us.
