Our news media have told us very little about the century of confusion in Iraq.
It began in World War One as Britain forced Iran to supply oil for the whole British navy - free of charge.
In 1941, British, Russian and U.S. troops entered Iran to 'defend' it. (Oh, this was in August, long before the U.S. entered the European war. So guess why it was so keen. This, in fact, was the beginning of the American campaign to get control of British-held oil fields in the middle east.
But in 1951, Iran elected Mossadegh as premier. And he did terrible things. He introduced social services and - horrors - he kicked out the British oil companies and nationalized the oil industry. Well, the British just showed him...
In 1953, the Shah returned - with the help of Britain and U.S. (the latter in the form of the CIA, America's killer squad) took over power again and, along the way, the U.S. stole control of most of Iran's oil
And Mossadegh? He spent the rest of his life as a prisoner.
Iranians kicked out the Shah out in 1979, and directed it's oil sales to Russia. Alas! It now faces the problem of governments controlled by Islam. Thus the latest rebellions and their brutal crushing.

The people in my city, Ottawa, have newspapers that are often (usually) propaganda sheets - and often of quite astounding ignorance. The prize for today goes to a columnist named Walter E. Williams. And he is - wait for it -
a professor of economics at a university I have never heard of - but will certainly avoid.
His theme is that the thousands of scientists all over the world who are warning us about climate change. Yes. It seems those evil people are really using the climate change issue to scare us all into destroying capitalists and becoming socialists or communists. He quotes a Chrstine Stewart, former Canadian minister of the environment. In fact, Christine Stewart had urged action on the problem of climate change. She never did much. But she did urge action on it.
Then he says rising sea levels has been happening for 20,000 years. Quite so. But
it's now rising a hell of a lot faster. None of Williams' evidence is scientific. Of course not. He has no scientific training. But, oh, he must must have proof that thousands of scientists around the world are trying to make us all communists.
This kind of inanity - and vicious and ignorant propaganda - are standard columns in the Ottawa Sun. And the world is full of arrogance and lies in many, many news media.
Above this column is one by another Ottawa Sun columnist, Anthony Furey, who is furious that Don Cherry got fired. After all, he writes, it was just a disagreement.
No, Anthony, it wasn't a disagreement. Don Cherry was fired because he delivered a racist statement against identifiable Canadians. And if he had made it against the Anthony Fureys of this world, they would have been screaming for his blood.
What a garbage press Ottawa has!
