June 11: The evil that surrounds us.....

I'm finding most of the information programming less useful every day. Until recently, some of it, at least, has been informative. CNN had it's moment of glory with it's coverage of the American crisis. But hey, guys, the crisis is not just about racism in the U.S. The racism exists all over the world. Racism is the
staple food of most of the world.
So maybe it's time for CNN to notice that that a major factor is the U.S. treatment of the rest of the world as it carries on the old, British tradition of murder, slavery, plunder all over the world. Apparently, our news media think that Black equality is good - but only if it's practiced within the U.S. It's okay to murder Blacks in Africa as well It's okay to murder to murder Latins in Latin America, to murder orientals in China,  to murder Muslims in the Middle East. It's okay for the U.S. to prepare to murder any millions it chooses to murder, and okay to starve all poor Americans while spending the world's biggest 'defence' budget on weapons for any international murderers who want them. (The horrible example of the mass murder of the people of Yemen with American weapons springs to mind.)

The only interest of capitalism is in making money for itself. It couldn't care less about what happens to the rest of us. Henry Ford, for example, not only supported Hitler in his rise to power, but continued to supply Hitler's war machine throughout the war.

The Rockefeller oil family of the U.S. supplied Hitler's armed forces with most of the fuel they needed throughout the war. Germany had no oil. It had hoped to capture the Russian oil fields, but was blocked by the Russians. The Bush family were big fans of all this, actively supporting Hitler from start to finish. In total, some 200 American corporations supported Hitler from the 1930s until the end of the war with billions of dollars, with massive oil supplies, especially from oil fields owned by Americans. Without them, the German submarine fleets would have been impossible; so would the German bombing of Britain. A great many British, Americans and Canadians died right up to 1945 because of British, Canadian and American capitalists. And, oh yes, families of the super wealthy like Bush and Rockefeller thought that killing Jews was a neat idea.

And as soon as the war ended, American oil capitalists moved in to take over British owned oil fields in the Middle East. As well, countries  like Iran and Venezuela have been starved, hungered, bombed to force them to hand over their oil fields to American corporations.

None of this is the work of  "the rest of us". The only ones who gain by all this are the major capitalists. Capitalism is a system that doesn't give a damn for 'the people'. It cares only for the capitalists. I'm noticing that even the best news media like The Guardian and the CBC aren't quite what they should be.

Check your local newspapers on this. You'll notice they don't say a word about it.

Do you think I'm exaggerating or lying? Okay. Check out these sites on the web.

https://time.com/5414055/american-nazi-sympathy-book/

https://web.mit.edu/thistle/www/v13/3/oil.html

And there are many other such sites. This relationship lasted throughout the war.
Roughly, some 200 major American coporations supported and supplied Hitler throughout the war. Perhaps the champ was Rockefeller (of Rockefeller Center in New York who supplied Hitler with oil and gas throughout the war.

And yes, the U.S. maintains such a relationship just as Britain did in it's glory days.

The big capitalists have no loyalties except to their own greed. And these are the ones who control both Washington and Ottawa.

I grew up in one of those districts. It was poor. It was violent. And our thinking about our lives was shaped by that. When I was sixteen or so, I was with my parents in church when the minister announced that several fine young men in the church were planning to enter the ministry. My parents stared at me with anger.

They realized I must be one of those 'fine-young-men' ---and I was trying to 'rise above my station'. They were very angry. We, including my friends, were raised to believe we had a responsibility to be ignorant.

As it happened, I was kicked out of high school a few months later for my many days of skipping school. My parents were pleased. I was accepting my station in life. Living in a poor district shapes the life one should conform to. Now, I could spend my life in a nice factory like my father did.

The following is an interesting point that Canadians should pay attention to.
For many years I wrote for newspapers which required dealing with editors and others , did twice-daily radio, did frequent TV often with panel shows, spoke to at least fifty audiences every year for a total of thousands of such encounters. There must, surely, have been non-whites at some of these - but I can't remember ever seeing one.

This has been the most depressing edition of the blog I have ever written.
I had known about Henry Ford's flirtation with Hitler and I had assumed it ended at the close of 1941. A few years ago, I learned about the Rockefeller family and it's role in supplying Hitler's army, air force and navy with fuel so they could bomb Britain, fuel their submarines and their tanks to kill Americans, British, Canadians... Without the Rockefellers and their social social class, Hitler   could not have murdered his way across Europe.

American super rich (and probably Canadian ones) are of the same breed today.  They may be crashing down now but, oh, They're going to take a lot of the world, maybe all of it, with them. They are people without morals and, as we watch the oil industry, without brains as they work to destroy us and them.

And this is the truth we haven't seen in our news media. We never have.

June 10: What's this all about?

Americans have been murdering Blacks for over 150 years. Street gangs quite publicly and with  general support even broke into jails to pull out Black prisoners to hang them or, often, to torture them to death. The Ku Klux Klan was busily murdering blacks, quite publicly, for all those years.

Some years ago, I was in Washington - and all the whites I encountered muttered about those damn Blacks and how it was time to deal with them. Churches in the U.S., through all those years have usually been, quite separately, either Black or white. (In fairness, I have to add that Christian churches almost since the origins of the Christian faith have supported murderers. German churches supported Hitler. Churches in the days of the British Empire supported the British murder of hundreds of millions. American churches supported the mass murder of native peoples, Latin Americans,

And it can get confusing. Britain is now attacking it's police for being racist. So they are. But they rarely kill anybody. A  typical year will produce perhaps 2 killings (almost always whites) by British police.

Britain and the U.S. have a murder list over the centuries and all over the world that probably runs over a billion. There is no count on the U.S. mass murder of Latin Americans for the last 120 years. They happily murder children today, especially children, all over the world, and have been doing so for centuries. But who cares?

Canada has been racist going all the way back to it's earliest settlers, when Black slaves  could be hanged or just plain butchered - as when a  Montreal Black slave was torn apart by horses. To this day, Blacks can have a hard time getting jobs in Canada, and many are still forced to live in ghettos.

I certainly support the movement to treat Blacks as equals. But I'm not at all sure that's what the current foofaraw is about. I'm not at all sure the demonstators know what it's all about. It's rather rare to get such massive demonstrations - especially when the need for this sudden round of demonstrations comes after centuries of popular and accepted  racial abuse.

I'm not sure the demonstrators themselves know what this is about. Nor is it likely that the Republican and Democrat parties know. It may have something to do with the direction of American power since 1945. It may be a disillusionment with this world's violence since 1945, and/or with the greed of billionaires who are the masters of political parties like U.S. Republicans and Democrats or Canadian Liberals and Conservatives.

We - and the demonstrators - really don't have a clear idea yet of what this is all about, of what displeases us.  But I suspect that it has a lot to do with anger at the very wealthy. and their abuse of all of us.

But it might be unpatriotic to say that.
_________________________________________________________________

Oh, and if Americans are going to get angry at killers, they might give a thought to the tens of millions  with a very high proportion of civilians killed all over the world by America's military, all of it paid for by their taxes.

The U.S. has been murdering Latin Americans for 120 years. That is no more acceptable than murdering Blacks in the U.S. It has driven Latin Americans into poverty in order to make white American Capitalists even wealthier. It has done the same in the middle east. And as capitalism has driven American Blacks into poverty, so it has driven the people of Latin America, the middle east and much of Africa into poverty.

Sadly, Canadian capitalists have joined their American brothers, sending Canadians to kill people (and to die in Cuba, in the Koreas, in Afghanistan, in Libya, the Middle East.) And Canadians cheered them as the Canadian dead were paraded on the so-called highway of heroes. Depend on it, American capitalists will soon need more Canadians to kill and be killed. And Canadians will cheer that as if it's something to be proud of.

(That's not a criticism of the Canadian forces. It's  a criticism of us, of how we cheered on our role so that our capitalists could be good friends of the American capitalists.)  All told, Canada, Britain and the U.S. have murdered well over 20 million people since 1950, most of them civilians and children.

This is not a criticism of our military. They volunteered, partly on the delusion we were the 'good guys', a delusion made popular by our news media. But it is a criticism of our Canadian Legion which has never had the guts to criticize our government for sending Canadians to kill and to die to please ---greed.

The U.S. has made it a point to bomb and otherwise kill children ever since the Dresden rade of World War Two. That was very pronounced in Korea, Vietnam, and Yemen. They also quite deliberately poison children  - as in Yemen.

https://theintercept.com/2020/06/03/children-killed-airstrikes-afghanistan-tbij-report/
_______________________________________________________________

News coverage of actions by the U.S. is becoming pretty dismal. It focusses very narrowly on the events within the U.S. As a matter of fact, the U.S. from the start has followed the pattern of its British ancestors with mass murder, enslaving and plundering. That began with the slaughter of native peoples and theft of their land, with mass murder and plundering of Latin America, ditto with The Phillipines, and with the Middle East, much of Africa, the theft of oil fields from the British after World War Two. It has been doing that for centuries.

Many Americans, probably most Americans, who support Black  rights have a long history, a long, long history of murdering and starving of millions going all the way back to the Pilgrim Fathers. And they're doing it today all over the world. But to them and their news media, Americans are good people who have now demanded good treatment for their Black citizens.

That's nice. But there are other people in the world that Americans, Canadians, British and other whites treat more ruthlessly than they have treated Blacks. There is no realization of their own  evil. If Americans do improve their treatment of Blacks, their horrible treatment of Asians, Africans, Latin Americans will continue - and do so in an even viler way.

And American capitalists will continue to be an evil curse on this world. And Canadians will continue to join them in that evil. And North American (and European news media will continue to ignore it.

And there is worse to come for Canadians and Americans. We have long since bowed to our greediest citizens, the ones known as capitalists. These are people who make democracy impossible. These are the ones who own America's Democrats and Conservatives, and Canada's Liberals and Conservatives. In comparison with those people, American (and Canadian) treatment of Blacks is a small matter.

But there is not slightest possibility that our news media will notice that.

We are all guilty to stand by with our faces hanging out.

June 6: The Worst of times.

Before Canadians get all virtuous about their virtue, they might want to look at their own history of racism.

The early French settlers of Canada kidnapped native peoples to be slaves. However, it was too easy for them to escape into the wilderness they came from.
So the French settlers imported Black slaves - under brutal conditions. In Montreal, a Black woman slave who annoyed her owner was  tied to horses who tore her death. Her body lies under a busy street in Montreal, unkown to most Montrealers.

The English settlers followed the French example well into the nineteenth century when Britain banned slavery. But what followed was years of forcing Blacks to live in undesirable districts, of making it impossible for Black women to get anything but the lowest paid domestic labour, Universities, like McGill, commonly made it something from difficult to impossible for Blacks to gain entry. (That was still the case in my childhood days.)

And Black men got none but the lowest paid jobs. Nor was (or is) the racism restricted to Blacks. In World War Two, Japanese Canadians in BC were forced out of their homes on very short notice,  and allowed to take only as much of their possessions as they could carry. (Neighbours then stole furniture, fishing boats...)

To this day in Montreal and (I expect) in other cities homes for rent commonly include the term "Select clientele only". That usually means no Blacks, no Jews,
no orientals......

In Nova Scotia I attended a Baptist university where a Black was accepted for the first time in the university's history. Also in Nova Scotia, Blacks were forced to live in dreadful ghettos. Halifax's blacks had to live in a vile district called Africville that was directly under garbage spill from a large hospital.

For twenty years, I was involved in the turmoil of what was called Quebec separatism. French Quebec leaders saw English Quebeckers as an undesirable race. These were years of threats, violence, murder    -  usually blessed by
French politicians. Indeed, that sort of violence was common in the largely French district I grew up in. When our church windows were smashed by a mob of French Catholic kids, a nearby Catholic church priest looked at it and said, "Well, it's only an English church."  (Yes. Really. I was there. And the police station across the street just didn't care.)

Canada has a long and vile history of racism.

The reality is that we have created a world in which a Hong Kong cannot exist.
We are constantly on the edge of war with China. And that is a monstrous cost to bear year after year for both sides. This is the kind of problem, and the cause of most wars, that cannot be settled by war.
To solve it, was have to do what we were supposed to do in 1945, to end war. That would save this world trillions of dollars, It would also make it possible to negotiate a peace between Hong Kong and China.
But that's no going to happen because our leaders (more correctly, our financial lords) want war.

You think China is evil? It is. But what the hell do you think the U.S. is all over the world?

A great many of this world's Jews are seriously Judaic in their principles. And that makes them quite different from most Israelis. Hitler didn't just murder Jews. He murdered a large part of Judaism.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/05/israel-west-bank-annexation-plans-condemned-leading-british-jews

Ever wonder why Britain and the U.S. wanted to create an Israel in the first place?  Seriously....it was to get rid of their own Jews. Canada was sending Jews to destruction from the 1930s to the end of the war. Canada, Britain and the U.S. knew that all that time. That's why we sent escaping Jews back to the death camps.

Thousands of leading scientists warn us of disaster facing us as our climate changing.

Dozens of billionaires with no significant scientific training tell us it's all okay - without offering any evidence for their opinion. Many of our politicians in the Democrats, Republicans, Conservatives and Liberals pay attention only to the super rich because they pay for those parties.

That's why Canada's Trudeau has done nothing. That's why Trump has done less than nothing.

Yes., while millions barely survive (and often don't survive) in Canada and the U.S., our billionaires get richer every day.

Aren't we crazy to allow our politicians to do this?

It even gets worse. We don't know how much of our money the super-rich are stealing because much of it is the part the we allow them to hide in secret bank accounts.

As I wrote all the above, I finally realized how wrong it is that most of us are  reacting as we have. What is happening is far more dangerous and more evil than we have realized. The U.S. and Canada both face a disastrous future - and it has already begun. It's worse in the U.S. than in Canada, but Canada will suffer as badly.

In both countries as the suffering grows our governments our both lavishing billions on our capitalists so that even as our economies tank, our capitalists having been making great profits - few of which come back to us.

And our capitalists are making sure they don't come back to us. We are victims of a war to make sure nothing comes back to us.

Our two world wars (I'm sorry to say) were because Hitler was evil? Uh. yeah But why should we have cared? Both Britain and  the U.S. spent and still spend years inflicting evil in the form of their empires. Both of them, going back for centuries have out-murdered Hitler by a wide margin. Yes, both world wars were fought to enrich the capitalists - on each side. And both were paid for and died for by the rest of us. And that's still true of all our wars.

Now, our capitalists have declared war on us. It's not hard. They own our Democratic, Republican, Liberal and Conservative parties. They always have and they always have plundered us.

The U.S. has been  worst off in this respect. For the last 20 years and more, the U.S. have been obeying its capitalists. Every society needs certain services like education and health care. American capitalists have destroyed universal services like those. Health care in the U.S. is now designed not to serve the people but to enrich the super rich - which means that the poor can't have it at all, and even the middle class can be impoverished by it.

The same thing is happening in the U.S. to one of the greatest advances in human history, the public school which is open and available to all. Billionaires have destroyed that,  creating thousands of private schools that become mandatory for any child hoping to go to university. By crushing public schools while switching resources to private ones, billionaires make huge profits. As I write this, Bill Gates, the world's richest man, has forced himself on the New York school board, to design private schools for all of New York city. (Bill Gates has no training in education. What he is doing is designing a system that will be expensive, too expensive, for a large part of the population - but very profitable to Bill Gates.)

Canada is quietly heading for the same path, with Canadian capitalists beating the drum. That's why Canadian schools are suffering from lack of attention and from inadequate financing from our governments and respect for our teachers.

Canadians should watch out for an American-style conversion of its medicare system.

Canadians have been dying in American wars since Korea. That, too, is likely to increase. American billionaires have a very serious challenge from China in it's rise as a military power and financial power. They want a war with China, and that would be the greatest and most destructive war in human history - and perhaps the last one.

The American military budget is a happy hunting ground for America's billionaires. It is the largest and most profitable military industry in the world. Oh, it's not that the workers are are superbly paid. But billionaire owners are very, very happy. That's so much more important than feeding and housing America's poor and starving, so much more important than cleaning huge slum districts all over the U.S.

Canadian and American capitalists are determined to impoverish Canadians and Americans to benefit themselves. That's why we have expensive 'defence' budgets. That's why the U.S. must destroy   China and Russia - soon. That's why our capitalists insist we must destroy the Chinese attack on Hong Kong. They don't give a damn for the people of Hong Kong. Indeed, any war on China now would be nuclear, and horribly damaging for Hong Kong. But American capitalists have to act now because China is even now leading the U.S. in military power and in wealth.  And that lead gets bigger every day.

(Canadians, of course,  will be asked to follow the U.S. lead. And Canada, as it has done since 1945, will get killed to please American and Canadian capitalists.)

The conflict that has arisen in Canada and the U.S. may not be what I first thought it to be. It may be the end of whatever democracy we have left. It may be rule by our capitalists, a prolonged decline in poverty levels -- and much, much worse.

June 4:Are we heading for the final act?

This site is designed to find the best sources of news.  Alas, this world is short of good news service whether in newspapers, radio or TV. This blog carries Britain's "The Guardian" because it is one of the only two or three honest news sources in the English world. Most of the other sources on the site are operated by honest, intelligent and concerned individuals and groups.

Do I have any experience of news gathering? Well, in addition to my full time job, I appeared for thousands of times on radio, TV, and writing for newspapers.

______________________________________________________________
I'm beginning this blog on the evening of June 3 because I very much fear what the night may bring.

Trump is a man with serious delusions about his sanity, his understanding of the essentials of a democracy, his knowledge of leadership....he has made a very bad situation into something much, much worse. And it is possible, even likely, that he is about to do something very, very foolish.

It could be, in effect, declaring war on most of the American people. It could be something very much worse - a nuclear war on China and Russia. This is a man with an ego so powerful in a mind so small and ignorant and trivial that he is  unpredictable.

He maintains his support among evangelical Christians because they are as   deluded as he is, and they eagerly want to see the end of this world when they will all go to heaven, and we will all go to hell.

This is the most dangerous time in the human history of this planet.

The following item appeared on my computer. What it has to say about racism in Canada is quite true. I grew up in a Quebec that was anti-Jewish and which, over the years, has been anti-Irish, anti-Chinese, anti-Muslim - and with French and English anti each other.

Capitalists exist only to make themselves richer. They go to war (using others  to do the fighting and to pay for the wars.) They insist on continuing to pump oil despite the evidence that it is destructive to human life. They destroy forests with no regard for the destructiveness of human life. And their wealth and  ownership of governments makes it certain that goverments will let them get away with all this. (It was many years ago that Trudeau announced his intention to end the oil industry in Canada. Since then, he has done nothing. - Well, actually he has done something. He has given billions of dollars of our taxes to American oil barons to encourage them to keep pumping it.)

Despite all our big talk, we allow capitalists to plunder nations, to murder millions, and to create a world that our children will not survive.  (And there seem to be few of us who give a damn.)

To make matters worse, the only opposition to Trump is the Democrat party which, as much as the Republicans, is in the pockets of the super rich.

Well, I have mixed feelings about this one. French Quebec had poduced a very violent and even murderous drive to force out the English and to separate Quebec from Canada. For many years, I was on the board of the province's English rights group - Alliance Quebec.

The English of Quebec suffered murders and threats of much, much greater violence and killing. I well remember the riots; I remember the night the Alliance Quebec office was burned and gutted while Montreal police were supposedly watching it from  across the street.

I remember the death threats that I and other members of the board got. I particularly remember the courage of our president who was a special target. We had to hire a guard for him, and he often had to wear a disguise in public.
Mobs of separatists filled the streets, calling for death for the English.

So the Canadian government sent in the army. And yes, I think that was a good idea.

Funny how our news media rarely mention these people  though they are the ones who own most of our governments in Ottawa and the provinces.  They are also the ones who don't pay the income taxes that we peasants do. (I wonder how much that costs the rest of us.) And, of course, they also hide huge sums in foreign and secretive banks. But there's never a story about this.

They also get sweetheart contracts from our governments. They pollute our country. They get huge financial gifts from our taxes. When times get tough, like now, they simply fire us peasants.

These are the people who steal our money, people whose only concept of progress is making themselves richer. They are the ones who insist Canadians must die to help out them in the wars of American billionaires in Korea, Afganistan, Libya.... They are why our schools are in trouble. They are why so many Canadians have to live in poverty. They, like the Irvings, pollute our forests, and own both the Liberals and the Conservatives.
Shouldn't we know more about them?

Alas! Any such change is virtually impossible in our universities. They don't recognize (or give a damn) about quality teaching. In fact, they don't even have any idea of what it means. Prestige (and ego) comes from publication of research. The ultimate prestige comes from being a professor who has a very light teaching load because his/her role is dedicated to research.
(I vividly remember one professor who demanded and got a year off so he could live in another city to do research. He knew nothing of teaching, and had nothing but contempt for it.)

No surprise. Since the World War Two bombing of Dresden in WW2, the U.S. specialty in war has been killing civilians and children right down to babies. That was very marked in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and in helping out Saudi murderers in Yemen.

But let's give full credit. The world leader in foccusing on killing civilians may well have been Winston Churchill, a thorough racist. During fighting against the Kurds, he ordered the RAF to bomb ONLY those helpless Kurdish villages and towns that had no defences and no military. (It's long been time to learn more about what a brutal racist and child killer Churchill was for his whole career.)

June 2: It never stops

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2020/jun/02/george-floyd-protests-violence-overnight-donald-trump-threat-army-live-updates

Well, I wouldn't stand up and cheer for Biden. He and his Democrats have been at least as  racist as the Republicans throughout their existence.

And Trump standing outside 'his' church to make a speech? Well, the minister says Trump has never been to that church.  (Of course not. Trump, the love child of the Evangelicals, has rarely been to any church - but the evangelicals will probably go on believing that he IS God.)

One thing to watch for in reports - don't confuse vandalism and looting with the general demonstrations. The two are not related. The demonstrators are trying to make a point. The looters are just the usual street thugs who are using the confusion to increase the looting they have always done.

As well, don't assume the demonstrators are reacting only to American racism.
That's how the news media see it.  But I'm not at all sure that's what the anger is all about. And I'm not even sure the demonstrators themselves have a clear idea of what this is all about.

It may be that it's, in an unexpressed or not understood way, a fury at the power of capitalism with it's power over  governments to plunder most of the people of Canada and the U.S. The big capitalists don't have to pay income tax; they're also allowed to hide their money from government; almost all wars of Canada and the U.S. are fought to benefit the super-rich but are paid for by us; Americans in particular are plundered by capitalists who deprive them of medical care by making it something that only the rich can afford, and who have also been converting public schools into agencies that, essentially, create profits for billionaires - and hopelessness for most children. In fact, in this time as millions of Canadians and Americans have no jobs at all and no income (well, slightly better in Canada) the super-rich are still making billions in profits.

The U.S., in particular, has always been a nation proud of it's democracy. The reality is it has always been owned and controlled by the super rich.

It may take a while for us to determine exactly what it is we are angry about. But it's about racism? Get real. Both Canada and the U.S. have long, long histories of racism. (And the same for Europe.)  It's bit of a stretch to say that in just a week we have discovered virtue.  I expect that neither we nor the U.S.yet understand exactly what it is we are demonstrating against. Let alone what the cure is.

Oh, meanwhile, China is emerging as the world's leading power. Western capitalism is dropping. If western capitalists want to stay in the game, they have to destroy China (and Russia). The western militaries can't do that. It would have to be done with nuclear weapons. That's why the U.S. has been spending feverishly to develop more powerful weapons.

Would Trump do such a thing?

YES,

Teaching requires a good deal of understanding how to teach. And teaching by computer is quite different from teaching live. And that takes us to a great problem.

Most teachers are not trained on how to teach by a computer. It gets worse in our universities as most (almost all) professors have no training at all in how to teach, whether live or by computer. Are we going to address this?

There have been no solutions to anything in the world of constant war we began to create in 1945.

I was born into a world dominated by the power of the British Empire. But that ended by 1941. It was ended by, of all things, the entry into World War 2 by a U.S. that hoped to take over some very prosperous parts of the British Empire - especially the Middle East and China.  (It got the Middle East, but missed out on China when it lost the Korean War.)
And so the Britain of today is increasingly feeble and even irrelevant. Canada fought in World War 2 to benefit Britain. Every school and church had pictures of the King and Union Jacks. Every school day started with the singing of "God save our gracious king; Long live our noble King..."
Canada fought three wars for Britain from 1900 to 1945. Since then, Canadians die only for the U.S.

We cannot survive - and also maintain a destructive oil system - But that's what we have done under Trudeau and under Conservative leaders.

Well, Britain is now, like Canada, an American puppet.

Why are we spending billions of (taxpayer's) money to build an oil pipeline when we know the damage it will cause? Exactly what is the Liberal policy on oil? Does it really have a policy?

May31: more

I can't keep up with this. That's why this is my second extension of the May 30 blog on the U.S. riots.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/may/31/george-floyd-protests-reporters-targeted-by-police-and-crowds

Besides France, there are protests in Britain. And in Montreal, the city I lived most of my life in, there are demonstrations planned for today.

It's hard to know what is causing all this.    Britain has never been friendly to Blacks. Montreal has a long history of open discrimination and persecution. For most of the hockey history of Montreal, only one Black has ever been permitted to play for the Montreal Canadiens. And Montreal has always forced Blacks to live in ghettos and, until recently, has never permitted them to hold most jobs.

I don't know why Montreal, Britain and France have suddenly become egalitarians. Nor do I quite understand this sudden support of Blacks in the U.S. In all cases, this comes after a many centuries long abuse and discrimination against Blacks. And I suspect that many of the white demonstrators don't understand it either.

This is a huge change in attitude for those millions who have a long history of racism. I'm glad to see it. But I 'm wondering what it's really all about. (If I were an American billionaire, I'd be getting worried right now.)

May 31: a special addition to Saturday's blog

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlU8OOUMq94

even as I was writing yesterday's blog, things got terribly, terribly worse. Now, at least 30 American cities have been caught up in riots against racism - and, perhaps, even more against disillusionment and anger among the American people in general. Increasingly, we can expect to see an American government turning loose the army against it's own people. Indeed, at least one military tank has already entered the fight against an American city.

(As an aside, there have even been violent protests in France against the behaviour of the U.S. government.)

We are watching what could be, and maybe almost certainly is, the collapse of the U.S. nation. And it's not just about American racism. It's about the arrogance and power of the super rich. It's about the failure of America's two political parties to serve anybody but the super rich. It's about the failure of American democracy - a failure that actually began a long time ago with George Washington.

The great danger now is that the U.S., for all the wretchedness of it's two political parties, still has a huge nuclear arsenal. America's super rich might decide  that this is the time to use it on China and Russia. (But, based on it's performance since 1945, I don't think the American conventional military can even consider tackling those countries on it's own.)

Europe might well be rethinking it's relationship with the U.S. as the U.S. becomes the briefest super power in history.

Will the U.S. violence have echos in Canada? Quite possible - even likely.
