Much of North America's news media treat our current crisis from a very local point of view. But this is not a local crisis.
China, for example, thinks that it's handling of the crisis, if a little slow in getting under way, has marked it's future as the major world power. The U.S., too, sees it as being linked to American world dominance. Thus Trump's insistence on making the crisis worse, much worse, for countries like Venezuela, Iran and Iraq.
Indeed, Trump's posturing and aggressive behaviour toward those countries suggest that war to retain American 'leadership' is virtually a sure thing --with all the possibility (probability) that this will lead to a world war.
Obviously, that would very quickly become the biggest, shortest and most destructive war this world has ever seen.
The U.S. could probably do more for itself and for the world by going to the help of those countries. But it won't. That has never been the way of American capitalism.
Will it happen? It is very likely. The U.S. has a long track record for such behaviour. (And it wouldn't matter whether Republicans or Democrats are in power. Both of those parties are owned by America's capitalistts.
What might get in the way of that scenario is serious disorder in the U.S. American's are profoundly confused, divided, irrational, fearful..... There is every possibility of severe disorder no matter who wins.
We face the most serious world crisis ever known. And we face it with no evidence of intelligent leadership anywhere.
The world of class and national power no longer can function. There can be no making of America 'great' again - or China, or Britain, or anybody. Wars have become so destrctive as to be unwinnable by anybody.
Almost all wars in history have been fought to benefit the very rich and greedy - and sommonly with rich and greedy on both sides (as they were in World War Two).
We have to change - profoundly. If we don't, nobody will win. And we will all lose.
(Oh, I can see it all now, members of the Legion jumping up an down to say we had to devfeat Hitler fo save the Jews and gypsies. Get over it. That;s not why World War Two was fouught.
For a start, Canada, Britain and the U.S. were as anti-semitic as the Germans were. Forgett what our news media told us. British and American capitalists admired Hitler - until he began threatening their territory. Britain did not go to war against Japan because Japan was evil. When the U.S. fought fought Japan it was trying to take over the British Empire in Asia - a British Empire that was as bad and as evil as the Germans and Japanese put together. The Americans entered the war in Europe for reasons that had nothing to do with saving Jews or rescuing Britain. It had to do with moving in on a British Empire that was collapsing - as in the case of Middle East oil.
We have very little time - and even less morality.

The U.S. has made enemies of nations that have suffered its greed and violence.
Increasingly, some of these are now closed to the U.S such as Cuba and Venezuela as well as more distant ones like Syria and iran. It may well be that the U.S. is doing rather poorly in its colonial ambitions.

Cuba is a far, far better place than it ever was when it was ruled by American gangssters and by a murdering and torturing government created by the U.S.
And it succeeded despite all the pressures of corrupt American leaders on it.
That's quit a comparison with the hell created by the U.S. in Haiti (with valiant assistance by Canadian soldiers and police.) Could the Canadian Legion put down it's beers for a moment, and think about that?
The U.S. has quite a record of mass murder, plundering, starvation, creation of brutal government as in Brazil, mass murder in Guatemala and many other countries in that region. And every step of the way, Canadian governments have made it a point to be on the American side as it starves children to death and appproves dictators like Bolsonaro of Brazil.
Funny thing, though. Canadian news media almost never mention any of this.
Especially has this been true of news media owned by Conrad Black - Who Donald Trump has befriended.
Cuba is evil? Guatemala is evil?
No. We are.

You think Canadians are not racist? Dream on. Canadians have always been world class racists. I grew up in a Canada in which Blacks were forced to live in a 'Black" section of the city, where the only decent jobs for Blacks were rare - as to limit black women to work as servants, and black men to the railways as porters, where Chinese were forced into a Chintown, where Blacks had rarely been accepted in universities. Ever see a Black hockey player? They have been rare.
Blacks could not be school teachers until the 1950s. (or 60s.)
When I took a troop of Chinese boy scouts to scout camp, they met with hatred and violence. (Jewish boy scouts got the same treatment.)
And these were small compared to the racist hatreds between French and English, Protestants, Catholics and Jews. (Britain, Canada, and the U.S. were (and some still are) profoundly anti-semitic in World War 2 and even later - into the 1970s and more in my experience.). This was particularly vicious among wealthy Canadians.
The same has been true of Canadian and American treatment of native peoples, not only with mass murder of them, but with theft of their land and general denigration of them.
You name them. We'll hate them.
