I am no admirer of the Government of China. But I know that what China has become is what we created. For more than a century and a half, China suffered horribly from British capitalism - with occasional help from the U.S. and others. When Chiang Kai-sheck rose to power inflicting even greater suffering on the Chinese, he ws supported by the U.S.

Love them or hate them, the rise of Chinese communists has made China a livable country with the schools, housing and health care it has never had under the years of British and American interference.

Has it quarreled with neighbours? Yes. But compared with western powers like Britain and the U.S., it has been gentle as a lamb.

Alas! The current government of China has become increasingly racist and aggressive. It's not nearly as bad as Britain was and the U.S. is. But it certainly is not a place I would care to live in. But the China of today is more like the murderous and racst U.S. than even the British Empire used to be.
And we're not likely to change that by threatening war with China. China's history under war, plundering, mass murder, and threats by Britain and the U.S. are what have made the China of today.

Worse. It has made a China we almost certainly can't beat.  We need to do what we utterly and deliberately failed to do in 1945 - to treat the Chinese as humans instead of as a people to be plundered and savaged. Indeed, we need to be doing that to countries all over the world.

You want to talk about evil people? Okay. Talk about the American billionaires who won't feed  or decently house Americn children. Of course not. They care only about their own greed.

This has been a horribly depresing bog to write. The U.S. is heading into war -with itself. It is smothered under its own greed - a greed financed to satisfy in insatiable super wealthy who are now displaying on open contempt for the American people.

This is a U.S. that is heading into a war with China, a U.S. that has a tiny population in comparison, a U.S. that hasn't in 20 years been able to beat a small part of Afghanistan, a part that has 30,000, 000 or fewer people who have only a fraction of them able to fight. It couldn't beat a much smaller Vietnam though it freely used heavy bombing of people, especially of women and children, and it used aird dropped poisons to destroy farms and children. It has thrown the middle east into 70 and more years of horror without doing anybody any good except for American billionaires. It is deliberately killing children in Latin America - as in Venezuela where it uses huger to do it's fighting.

Now, it's leaders are also killing Americans. The U.S. greed is the greed of the super rich. And it's now destroying itself. I'm not at all sure than Canada can avoid getting caught up in this. Canadians are already accomplices to American greed and savager in Latin America, the middle east. and near the Russian border. It will be looking for Candians and others to stand with it in China.

And a dying U.S. may want to annex Canada as it has aborbed other nations - to take their resources.

Many American have been rebelling against this nation ruled by greed  But both
Republican and Democrat politicians have taken the side of the super rich. (Trump's leading education minister is an super-wealthy woman who believes that all schools should be private. Tough luck for the majority of children who can't afford that. (She also is an evangelical who believes that God wants all children to recieve Christian - evangelical- training.)

The U.S. is crashing into a thousand idiocies; and the super rich rule the land. This is now the most dangerous world we have ever seen.

This is the lowest I have ever felt in writing this blog. Most news media, even the good ones, seem to be running out of things to say. The reaction of the very wealthy is an utter contempt for the rest of us -as well as a profound stupidity about their own destiny.  And, in many countries - like Canada, the U.S. UK, France, Brazil, perhaps China - most of our political leadership is, to put it kindly- absent. And so it is that we are ruled not by our elected people but, in reality, by our greediest and most vicious

All of this reminds me of the researchers whose studies of us homo sapiens over many, many thousands of  years reveal us as the most vicious and greedy ceatures this planet has ever seen in a million or more years. It seems that larger brains produce higher intelligence - but also much higher capacity for evil. And this has become much worse with industrialization - so much so that our greediest are now engaged in destroying the whole planet. This is a development they cannot win - but greed, as in the government hacks of Ontario and Alberta, drives the insanity of their behavour.

One product of this is our glorification  of war. Our side is ALWAYS good. The other side is ALWAYS evil. Actually, wars are seldom about good and evil. I thought of that one day as I listened (in pain) to the historian who is almost certainly Canada's leading military historian. His speech, like his books, was a glorification of killing by our side. (The other side is always evil in his writing.)
He was the man who designed Canada's war museum, a museum which tells us little about our wars, glorifies our military - but doesn't notice the evil of our participation in the mass murder of South Africans or Libyans or Afghans or Koreans or Afghans or Syrians. No, it's all glory, glory, glory to the speaker who stepped down at the end with an amazingly exaggrated swagger that suggested he,  in ciritizing a high school history text, was amazingly courageous. (Actually, and as the professor must have known, any principal who permitted a history text book that told the truth about Canada would have been fired by the school board - and quite possibly fired on the advice of the professor.)

World War Two was NOT fought because Hitler was evil. It was fought because capitalists on both sides (Britain, France, Canada, and the U.S. one one side, Germany, Italy, and Japan on the other) feared the other sides' growing economic competition. But one would never know that from the reporting of our news media or, alas, most of our historians.

We, all of us, have to overcome our human love of evil. And we have to do it soon.

Oh, and has Christianity had any effect on all this?

The following is the most powerful account of a war I have ever seen. It shatters many illusions we have about war. Almost all this is in this account that was NOT reported by any other news medium. The war was the Iraq war.  George Bush lied, Britain's Tony Blair lied. In comparison, even the vile ruler of Iraq seems like  a sweetheart.

Oh, and pay no attention to the official figures. And never, never trust anything that's official.
Studies suggest that humans are the most vicious killers in all animal life. The belief, which seems realistic, is that from our earliest appearances on this planet we have been the greatest killers.
This was the result of our brains which, through thousands of years, became bigger, much bigger than other life forms. And that powerful brain is what has made us into the killers that we are.
The greater brain made it easier to kill as over the years it also gave birth to some humans who were able to match their brains to control other humans and use them to kill other humans. This,in the form of emperors and kings (and presidents and prime ministers), became real power.

Similarly, our brains enabled us to do what no other animal could do - create weapons. At first,
they were rocks, perhaps, then clubs and spears. Over the years, our brains took us to guns and high explosives and, most recently, to nuclear weapons.

And it can only get worse.

Yes, Canada is racist and always has been. Our treatment of Blacks is the most obvious example. But our racism includes or has included orientals, Jews, Muslims. I grew up in a Monteal in which French hated English and English hated French. I knew a notorious Black man who used to wait for me every day as I walked to the radio studio. He had a passionate and very intelligent interest in the history of  Blacks in Canada, and he walked with me every day to discuss it. I knew him as a man of compassion.

But, oh, he had terrible reputation among both Blacks and Whites.

He was a pimp who provided prostitutes for Montreal's professional athletes. That made him despised by both Blacks and Whites. But we lived in a society in which Black men could get only the most menial jobs. And Black women? Well, they could become the cheapest of household servants. Or they could become prostitutes and make something closer to a survival income.

Yes. My friend was a terrible man. He was widely condemned for it. But I never heard a word of criticism of all those white athletes who used his services.

Every year,  we hand over a large part of our tax money to the super wealthy. We also allow our wealthy to hide their money,  safe from taxation. The drift of all wealth to a small number of the very rich has been happening for years. Millions are going homeless (and foodless) to satisfy the greed of a very small number of the super rich.
And we go on electing the political parties who care nothing about us, and everything about the super rich. We fight and die  for their wars. And we are the ones who pay for them,  and our children are the ones who die for them.

July 16: Back in the saddle again! ----- I hope.

This site had a terrible crash over a week or so ago. But by means I don't understand it is suddenly alive again. And this is a good time to explain what I never did explain - what this site is all about.

My starting point is that almost all of the commercial news media lie. And there's a reason for it.

The modern, commercial news media date back to 1850 or so. With large staffs, they were expensive to operate,  and became increasingly expensive   by the late 19th century. Only rhe very wealthy could afford to own them.

One result, a comic one, showed up when a British Army officer commanding a force in the Boer War, got himself bottled up in a town called Mafeking. And that became the leading story in the British press for months. When a British force broke through to relieve him, the British papers went wild, sparking national jubilation so wild that for years afterward any wild public outbreak was called "Mafeking."

The British military command wasn't so happy. The officer who became famous was Baden Powell -and he was not supposed to be defending Mafeking. Nor was he supposed to be in it. The British army command was furious. But it had to accept Baden Powell and promote him to general. But it would never again allow him to have a command.

So Baden Powell went off to lead the Boy Scouts.

In 1914, he offered to serve in World War One. But the army said no - his work with the Boy Scouts was too important to take him away.

However, this whole affair was a lesson to the newspapers. They could shape events.

About the same time that Baden Powell was making a mess of Mafeking, an American newspaper owner in the U.S. was using his newspaper to start a war with Cuba. An American ship blew up and sank in a Cuban port. An American newspaper owner, William Randolph Hearst, wanted a war with Cuba. He wanted to kick out Spain from Cuba, and take over ownership of Guantanamo Bay. This was a first step in the American takeover of Latin America, a takeover designed in the long run to take over all of Latin America, and plunder all of Latin America and it's people.

There was never any evidence that hostile forces blew up the Maine. Indeed, the only evidence was that the ship was very badly maintained by it's captain and crew. No matter. The rich friends of Hearst now began the plundering that still goes on in Latin America.

Almost all commercial newspapers to this day are propaganda sheets for the wealthy. Many years ago, I had to share radio time at CBC with newspaper owner Conrad Black. He was a ranter for the rich, and an egoist of massive proportions When he went to jail in the U.S. for his corruption he wrote a book in praise of Donald Trump.And so Trump pardoned him.

I know of only two English language newspapers that tell the  truth. One is Britain's "Manchester Guardian". That's why I always include it's stories. The other one is Israel's "Harretz" though. alas, Haaretz deals mostly with Israel only.

Luckily, there are quite a few free news sites on the web, most of them operated by disillusioned journalists. With care I select some of them. (This needs care because there are also news sites on the web that cannot be trusted.)

For Canada, the best commercial news source is CBC - But even that suffers from constant interference by the management.  BBC, once a decent source, no longer is decent.

The reality is that most, almost all, of our commercial press is heavy on propaganda. And that can include virtually all the commercial press including - yes - the New York Times. The purpose of my blog is to tell the truth.

We rarely get a look at how corporations rip us all off by avoiding taxes. Noboody knows how many billions (or trillions) we lose by this every year. The people of Canada and, indeed, the whole western world hand out enormous sums to billionaires while, even in Canada and the U.S., children starve and even live in the streets.

Yes, Trudeau was wrong and he did accept bribes. But to concentrate on him is to lose sight of a much, much bigger picture.

1945 was supposed to be the war to end wars. The reality is that the U.S. saw 1945 as the yea  to begin American economic domination of the whole world. It would be world rule by American billionaires. The first targe for that as China. And that is the real reason the U.S. (and Canada and others) attacked China's neighbour, Korea, as a base for the conquest of China.

And it failed.

China's action was quite understandable. With a century and a half of British plundering and brutality, it had no intention of allowing an American takeover. So the peace of 1945 turned into 75 years of war. The U.S. knocked the British out of the picture pretty quickly so I had to settle for becoming servants of the U.S. The same happened to Canada which has to support American brutality and murder in Latin America (as in Afghanistan,, Libya, eastern Europe, Syria, Haiti) so that Canadian billionaires can get a share of  the action.

And that was all worse than wrong.

We now face a world of nuclear weapons,thousands of them that would kill billions of people. (Yes. Most of those billions live in relatively poor countries. But who gives damn? In 1945, we should have planned for a world of peace But we didn't.

We now face a world dominated by the very, very wealthy whose only nterest is in becoming more wealthy.--and who have made it clear they don't give a damn about the rest of us. And we all face horrors of climate and other changes to our earth but, alas, the very rich don't seem to care about that.

We should have dealt with these issues in 1945. But the only interest the U.S. had then was to make it's billionaires richer  - and that set off dozens of wars for the convenience of the rich.

We should have come to terms with China. We didn't. Now, the U.S. has to work soon against China because the U.S. may be beoming the shortest empire in history. And the consequences of such a war are impossible to guess.

This story is not quite as clear as one might hope. For many, many centuries this world has operated with nations at each other's throats. International cooperation was rare. Instead, nations were at each other's throats with mass murder and plundering. We were supposed to end that in 1945. But we didn't. The leader in this descent into hell was the U.S. with heady ambitions to rule the whole world, American capitalists set themselves to return us to the 'good ol' days of mass murder and plunder.

It's major target was China. So, instead of a new world of cooperation and peace, we recreated the old one of mass murder and plunder. Thus the UN invasion of North Korea as a stepping stone to the conquest of China. And a major justification of this was that China was evil because it was communist.

Of course, most people on our side really had no idea of what communism was. But it was evil. So we had to kill Chinese. Not one person in a thousand actually knew what communism was.
I don't know whether it was evil. I do know that capitalism is a system as cruel and murderous as they come. Capitalism was the engine of the British Empire that murdered and plundered over 400 million people.Hitler's Germany was capitalist. American capitalism had been responsible for mass killing  of native peoples and for the killing and plundering of Latin America - not to mention The Phillipines which the U.S. murdered so that American capitalists could steal the resources of The Phillipines.

For China, the reality was that British capitalists had murdered and plundered China for well over 150 years. Communism, whatever that meant, created a China of growth. And in 1945, (and still today) American capitalists went to war against a communism that did far more good for China than capitalism ever did.

After World War Two, we should have treated China with cooperation. We didn't. And any continuation of this behaviour will mean a nuclear war.

As I have often said, I don't really understand what communism is. But I do know what capitalism is, and I've seen it's addiction to mass murder and plundering.

We had a chance in 1945 to make this a better world, a world of cooperation and peace. Instead, we chose for a world of plundering and greed. I don't know whether we can overcome that. I do know that if we don't overcome it, there is no future.

This is the most depressing news day I have ever seen. A war with China is possible - and likely.
Whatever it's faults may be, China is not a threat to the U.S.,  and never has been. We have never seen Chinese warships patrolling off the American coast and threatening to attack. The U.S.has been agressively active in waters off China.

If the U.S. attacks China, Canada will be 'invited' to take part. (And Canada's leading military historian will clap hands.)

China's nuclear stock pile is relatively small. The U.S. one is the second biggest in the world. The biggest is Russia. And Russia might very well feel it has to intervene on the side of China.

China is a threat to the west? Nope. The big threat to the west is the U.S. in Latin America and Asia here it has almost constantly been at war and murdering millions for seventy years since the end of World War Two.

Would the U.S. attack Canada? That is quite possible as it begins to suffer the loss of land due to climate change. It is also possible the U.S.will find itself in a civil war over its very large population of racists and over the substantial support for Trump's racism.  Meanwhile, both Democrats and Republicans are selling out democracy and handing over power to the very small number of  the super rich who who are behind wars all over the world,  and who are happily inpoverishing the American people.

July 8: A very bad several days.

This has been a trying time. I have a new computer. Thus my missing of blogs as I try to figure out how to go through the process all over again of how to set up a blog. And it's not going well. This will also be brief because It's late in the day. I don't know how long it takes to learn how to operate a new computer which is very different from my last one. But so far, it's tougher than I thought. As well, I write this as the U.S. is nearing collapse. The divisions in that land are very deep. The military weapons crowd is prominent, fully armed and politically very far to the right. This is - maybe - one step short of a civil war. Or it might even be beyond that as their numbers are very great, and as the police, who happily killed Blacks, show no great interest in facing down the military weapons freaks. As well, the Trump vote is not going to disappear soon. It is quite possible that the U.S. may be caught up in severe violence even before the election. Other possibilities? Trump might refuse to lose the election, a move which will be made easier by the stunning corruption that will surface in this election. To that corruption, add the probability of a massive drive by the super rich to make sure that they continue to control the country. The collapse of the American dream of ruling the world is now a sure thing. In the chaos, a nuclear war is quite possible. We are, almost certainly, watching the collapse of a nation but, oh, it can do enormous damage on the way out. And that could well affect Canada as part of a divided U.S. might well attempt at least partial annexation of Canada. July 4: The End of The News.

I'm preparing this in case I need to send something earlier than usual. My computer will be off for repairs sometime very soon. So this is being prepared now in case my computer has to go at a bad time.

Meanwhile, most of the press seem to be floundering in a world that has profoundly and dangerously changed. Most of them, so far as I can tell, just don't tell the truth. Others just - flounder.

American democracy, if it ever existed, has long since vanished. But most of the press prefer not to notice that. Britain has collapsed into a long, dark tunnel. And it ain't coming back.

Canada is busy shovelling billions into the pockets of billionaires, even the ones who are killing us with their pollution.  Prime Minister Trudeau prefers not to talk about his kissing up to  the most vicious (not just Trump) American political leaders.

It is quite possible, even probable, that either Trump or Biden will decide on war against China - and will expect Canada to take part.

We live in a world that abandoned all we said we were fighting for until 1945. Instead, we have had endless wars to please the super-rich. A whole continent (Latin America) has become a place of destruction of democracy, of mass murder, of starvation of civilians and children - all to please American (and Canadian) billionaires.
 We have created a scale of  horror and greed that exceeds anything the world has known before.

Not surprisingly, our billionaires own most of the major news media. So we don't hear much of this.

What are we planning for the future? Nothing. We have allowed the super wealthy to create a world with no  future. We are ruled by a capitalism that is interested in nothing but it's own greed. And we are informed by news media that really have nothing to say.

Hong Kong's situation is desperate. Can we threaten China with war to prevent what it happening to Hong Kong?

No. For all the bluster of the war fans, any such attack would destroy much of Hong Kong. And that's particularly true of nuclear war which is probably the only kind of war that the U.S. could win. (Maybe).

Is some action possible?  Maybe. But this problem has origins that go way back and have nothing to do with 'evil' Chinese. For well over 200 years, Britain with help from Portugal, Germany, then the U.S. made China into a living hell.

They, especially the U.S., could have ended that by helping China to rebuild after 1945. But no. Instead, the U.S. tried to invade China. That's what the Korean War was all about. And  that has created a China that  can only distrust the west.

So what can we do to help Hong Kong? We can't help it with more bluster and bullying. We can help it by changing our whole attitude toward China. Then, by being friendly to China, we might be able to help Hong Kong.

Until we try that, and  there is nothing we can do for Hong Kong.

The major purpose of America's huge "defence" budget, far the biggest in the world, is not to defend the U.S. It is to provide huge profits for America's super rich.

And that's why the U.S. cannot provide it's very poor with food and shelter, and why it lavishes its weaponry on countries like Saudi Arabia and Israel that fight endless wars against civilians and children - just like the U.S. does.

You might think this blog was prepared in a hurry. And you would be right to think so. I have to send my computer off VERY soon for repairs.

Meanwhile, we have inherited one hell of a world. In 1945 we had to the chance to create a world whose only concern would be the freedom and needs of all it's people.

And we blew it.

Think nothing whatever the billionaires and their political flunkies who now rule the world. They can do only what they have been doing for the last 75 years - killing, plundering, abusing most of the rest of us. This is a system that is going to crash because of it's own greed and it's indifference to human needs and rights.
And either we will make it crash and then rebuild according to real needs for all or we will let it continue to destroy all of us.
