Government of the people, by the people, for the people.....sounds good. But it has never happened in the U.S. From the start, the U.S. was driven by serving the rich - as in slaughtering native peoples so that land speculators (like George Washington) could steal their land.

The British Empire was much the same - though with almost all officers drawn from the upper classes, and the common soldiers treated like dirt, and dumped on the streets when they were no longer useful. The only difference is that the British Empire killed far, far more innocent people than the U.S. has so far.

But the U.S. obviously intends to catch up.

Fracking for oil has long been known for its poisonous effects on humans and animals. But B.C. has long been paying oil companies to drill for it and sell it for their own profit. And so far it has paid these wealthy companies at least 2 billion dollars.

Does this oil industry in B.C. create jobs? Obviously not.

Indeed, all across Canada we hand over huge amounts of our money to billionaires who really don't need it. (Check out recent gifts to Irving oil in New Brunswick.)

How come most of our news media don't ever tell us about this? (And check out who controls our news media - like National Post and Irving press.)

Christianity died starting - almost - from it's birth. Christians have always been the biggest killers and thieves in the western world - starting from the Roman Empire.

Hitler publicly declared himself a devout Christian. So did Churchill who, in his long career, murdered millions - in a 'Christian' empire that murdered hundreds of millions and plundered much of the world.   President George Bush Sr. murdered 200,000 innocent people in Guatemala, including very large numbers of priests and nuns. And  he was a very welcome member of Christian churches.
So was his murderous son. And still is.

Jesus, we are told, died for our sins. But Christians, almost from the start, have celebrated our sins. Jesus, I am sure, would have spoken against this. But His churches almost never do. Nor, I must add, does Israel - though Jews still living in the western world are much more serious about their faith.

So much for 'thou shalt not kill'.

Another commandment orders us not to covet. But, gee! Billionaires have to covet. That's the whole foundation of capitalism.

Another story that won't make most of our news media.

Hitler's mass murder of Jews was, indeed, one of the most dreadful events in history. But Hitler was helped by Britain, the U.S. and Canada who knew about the death camps well BEFORE the war started - and who refused to help the Jews by allowing them to come to their countries.

Even at the end of the war, we would accept them. The whole purpose of creating Israel, even as we ALL by then knew what Hitler had done, was to move them to any place but our profoundly anti-Jewish countries. Thus the creation of Israel. It was not to help them, but to get rid of them.

If Israel really wants to punish somebody, it should be us. But we have, instead, punished the Palestinians who had nothing to do with our Hitler's (and our) treatment of Jews.

https://theintercept.com/2019/11/06/trump-native-american-heritage-month/

The U.S. slaughters of men, women and children native peoples  from 1700 to 1900, with a special emphasis on killing women and children, reduced that population from some millions to just some 70,000. And it became Hitler's model for the holocaust of German Jews.

The British, French and other European nations quite joyfully slaughtered hundreds of millions in their empires. This was, of course, the work of the upper classes who were plundering their nations. Winston Churchill was a major figure in this, representing his social class that happily murdering men, women and children of non-whites - and of foreigners in general. He, in fact, murdered millions of 'non-humans')  all over the world.

Quebec, which now legislates against English and Muslim 'intruders' of their French society, has conveniently forgotten that it forced itself on the aboriginals of that province, and murdered some - and stole the land from the survivors.

________________________________________________________________

As if this weren't enough of me to have to read, you'll find the rest much worse.

In war, news media see their own countries as the good guys, and the enemy as evil, bad guys. But that is almost always misleading. So let's trace our history of good guys and bad guys since 1900.

In 1900, the British invaded South Africa. It's population was then largely of native Blacks and of Dutch settlers who plundered and abused them. But that's not why Britain invaded. No. South Africa has massive gold mines. And wealthy British wanted to plunder them - not for the British people, of course, but just for the super rich ones.

First, they put pressure on Canada, Australia, India and other parts of the empire to join them. Why? Surely not because the British needed the help against so many helpless people. And, in fact, it was an old practice that the British never before had ordered it's colonies to help fight it's wars. In fact, it usually didn't want them to. But this was different.

The difference was that the Europe of 1900 was obviously moving toward a massive war, one that demanded more than Britain could do. So the Boer War was used to set a precedent for all the colonies to join in wars of value only to the wealthiest of the British.

The pressure on Canada was tremendous with almost all Canadian news media joined in for sending Canadians to South Africa. Oh, the newspapers were all owned by Canadian businessmen who depended heavily on the British market.

And, of course, they never said it was to kill and steal. No, no. Canadians were to 'serve the king, God bless him'.

So it was that 280 Canadians died so that very wealthy British could plunder the gold mines. (In a footnote, we should also add that 28,000  men, women and children died of disease in prison camps, many of them run by Canadians. I heard a good deal about this when I was teaching in The Netherlands - the Boers were Dutch.)

In 1914, Britain could call on the precedent of the Boer War and urged Canada to 'serve the king, God bless him.  Newspaper took up that theme, and Canadians rushed to join. And, of course, Germany and Austria were evil in our papers.

But reality was more complicated.

Almost ALL of Europe was preparing for this war, and it had nothing to do with 'good'.

What led to this was the rapid industrialism of Europe, and the fear of each country's capitalists that one of the other capitalists would attack them. So it was that almost every country plunged into war production. Railways  had by them become essential for winning wars. So every country that could built them, with combat troops based near them for instant use. Any hint of a war would meet immediate railway based attacks. Nobody could dare pausing for a moment should it seem that anybody might send out their troops in a mindless panic.

That's why the start of the war was foolish and exaggerated by all the powers. And that is why the balloon went up with the assassination of an archduke of no great importance to the world. But one whose death would turn loose a terrible world war.

It ended with the surrender of Germany and it's allies. Now, this was a war that all of use were responsible for. Germany and it's allies were no more to blame than all the rest of us.

But the capitalists, especially of Britain and France, saw the surrender as a chance to economically destroy Germany forever. They destroyed it with massive financial penalties that had to be paid to Britain and Germany for uncountable years to come. They were so massive that German money became worthless, so worthless that children were allowed to play with it in piles over their own heads.

And that British and French greed of their super-rich, not Germany, was the evil that caused World War 2.

Germany was in chaos and horror. And a young man saw this as his way to power.

Adolf Hitler, a soldier of no distinction, essentially a message runner and a civilian with very little status indeed, saw his chance. In jail as he watched Germany's suffering, he saw his path to power, summing it up in Mien Kampf.
British and French greed and German anger had opened the door to him.

As he left the prison, he determined to go through that door. He also realized he needed something else - villains in Germany. He found his model for that in the U.S. slaughter of its native peoples from millions down to some 70,000 or so. And his choice in building on that example was Jews.

Did Hitler hate Jews?  Probably not. Once in power, he arranged for his mother's doctor and his family to flee to Latin America. No. Hitler neither hated nor loved. He only used and abused.

And far from alienating the wealthy of Britain, Canada, and the U.S. they admired him up to the start of the war - and even after. Yes, despite the name of his party, National Socialist, there was not a socialist bone in his body. He was admired by capitalists all over the world. Perhaps the loudest and most ardent of the capitalists was Henry Ford. Hitler might well have become the hero of all capitalists if he had simply invaded Russia. But no, he had greater ambitions.

So Hitler started a world war in 1939.

Interestingly, the U.S. took a long time to join. Of course. Many, many of the wealthiest Americans thought Hitler was a great guy, and a barrier to socialism. They even continued to trade with Germany after 1939 and after the defeat of France and the great danger into which Britain had fallen. So why did it join the 'allies' at the end of 1943?

It had nothing to do with coming to Britain's rescue. It had nothing to do with saving the Jews. (In fact, the allies had no interest in helping the Jews before, during or after the war.)

No. The U.S.entered the war because Japan had kicked the British out of China.
Britain had for many years impoverished the people of countries like China and India. It had murdered them, starved them, abused them, impoverished them by the hundreds of millions at least. It was all very profitable and, oh, the U.S. wanted to grab it before the Japanese or the even the British could come back. But most Americans did not favour such a war. So Roosevelt had to make it seem Japan started it.

It was easy. He could off the supply of oil that was essential for Japan's wars. That would force Japan to start the war. And then the American people would join.

Alas! Japan's response was unexpectedly strong with the bombing of Pearl Harbour. But Roosevelt did get his war. Alas! He never got China. Nor did Britain - though it did recapture Hong Kong at the end.

Wealthy Americans also wanted another piece of the British Empire, the oil fields of the middle east. During the war, they replaced the British as the closest friends of the rulers of Saudi Arabia, a closeness that now has created chaos in much of the middle east. And after the war, it got control of British oil fields all over the region. That's what the Iraq war was all about. And Syria. And the oil baron Americans now want Iran.

The British had viciously plundered Iranian oil from 1918 to 1948 until Iranians formed a democracy and kicked the British out. With U.S. help, the British destroyed Iranian democracy and installed a dictator. After a time, Iranians fought back, establishing control over their own country. Now Trump wants to make American oil billionaires happy by bombing it.

In 1945, the Second World War ended.

But greed didn't.

Nov. 9: The very dangerous world created by ----us.

https://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/features/sea-ice-is-an-endangered-species-declining-rapidly-in-canadas-north

A footnote -  In World War 1, the British had also taken control of Iran. And it forced Iran to supply the British navy with oil free of charge from 1918 to 1948 when Iran kicked the British out, kicked out their dictator ruler, and became a democracy.

Needing help to get back, the British  sought American help to destroy democracy in Iran. The Americans were happy to do so. They and the British destroyed Iran's elected government, and imposed the old dictator - the Shah. And the Americans, by that, put themselves into control. In fact, the U.S. went to war on the British side, it's main purpose was to take over middle east oil from the British.

Ever since, the U.S. has largely replaced the British as rulers of the Middle East. That's why it fought  a war on Iraq. That's why American troops are in Syria today - to steal Syrian oil - yes - steal - as American trucks in convoy carry out the theft. That's why it wants a war on Iran. And that's why, in effect, it is conducting a war against Venezuela.

And that's why the whole world is now facing it's final disaster. And that's why Arctic sea ice is rapidly disappearing.

Strange....Hong Kong was, for 156 years, under an extremely arrogant British rule. Hong Kongers for that period had NO rights None. Zilch. And, for much of that time the British forced Hong Kong and the rest of China to become addicted to opium forced on them by British capitalists.

I knew some of the British who were still ruling Hong Kong  when I was there.    They hadn't changed in all those years. They had nothing but contempt for all Chinese. All Chinese were simply slaves in their view. They were slaves with no right to democracy. And when the Japanese conquered much of China, the U.S. tried to moved - not to bring democracy to it but to plunder it as the British had.
Their puppet was Chiang kai-shek, a military officer who ruled China as brutally as the British had, and who was perhaps the largest opium dealer of his time.

China was long one of the most savagely treated nations of its time. (It was the same as the British savaging and  plundering of India where, in its late, colonial years, Churchill starved millions to death though plenty of food was available.) There were some good guys in our treatment of the Far East - but they were very, very few.

And can Hong Kong defeat China? No. And, yes, that is very sad. And yes, China is slipping back to treating Hong Kong - just like we did.
_________________________________________________________________

A footnote - Almost all wars are fought to benefit the very rich.  World War One was fought largely to benefit the very rich of Britain and  Germany. American oil billionaires were planning to join World War Two BEFORE the attack on Pearl Harbour. And they wanted to plunder it as the British had. They had no great   interest at first in defeating Hitler. Indeed, among American (and British) capitalists, there was a good deal of admiration for Hitler. One of his admirers was Henry Ford who detested Jews.

No. A major reason the U.S. joined the European war was so it could steal the British oil fields in the Middle East. And it did so immediately after the war. That's why Saudi Arabia, largely created and controlled by the British thanks to Lawrence of Arabia in World War One became a major ally of the U.S. after World War Two. In World War 1, the British had also taken control of Iran.

In our news media, our enemies are usually  portrayed as being evil. Sometimes, as with Hitler, they are.  And, sometimes, we are evil, too.

And often, countries like Canada get caught up in wars only to please our masters. At first we fought wars for Britain, as in the Boer War. Actually, the British were the evil ones. This was a war for British capitalists to steal the gold of South Africa. We had no obligation to fight in British wars. So why did we send Canadians to die?

Now, Canadians fight wars to please their American masters. That's why Canadians were sent to die in Korea, Afghanistan, Syria (Yes, some were killed there.)  That's why Canada's air force bombed Libya. That's why Canada helped the U.S. to destroy an elected government and install a dictator in Haiti. We then sent Canadian troops to protect the dictator. But we were cute enough to call it peacekeeping.)

That's why Canadian governments almost always support American brutality and murder in Latin America.  That's why Canadian news media never reported on the U.S. slaughter of at least 200,000 Guatemalan civilians in the 1950s and 60s, including mass murder of priests, missionaries (including a Canadian one), and nuns. That's why Canada supports the U.S. in it's treatment of  Syria and much of Latin America and, indeed, in almost all its wars.

And all of that is why Canada is finding it difficult to be taken seriously by the UN. The whole UN knows that Canada is an American puppet.

Incidentally, we  have had little reporting of this century's change in the nature of war.

It began, perhaps with Winston Churchill when he was minister of colonies in 1920. He was busy, as now the U.S. oil business is busy, at conquering middle east countries. In 1920, that meant conquest of the Kurds. And his strategy was to murder Kurd civilians. So he ordered the RAF to bomb only villages and towns that had no military defences. (It was easy for him. Churchill was a crashing racist.)

Hitler imitated that in bombing civilian Guernica in Spain. (And our news media all reported that nobody else had ever done such a thing.) He also did it in bombing Britain and much of civilian Europe.

Then, in 1945, our side took it up. For several days, we bombed Dresden - a city of no significant military value. It was a deliberate murder of civilians. Even Churchill, of all people, was shocked. (Well, of course. Killing  innocent civilians  who weren't really white was one thing. But killing innocent whites was quite another.)

And that was the model for the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Neither had any significant garrisons or war industry or defences. It was deliberate slaughter of  men, women, children. babies. And for most there were not even ashes to find. The dead were between 129,000 and 233,000, almost all of them civilians.

And everybody on our side cheered - and still cheers.

And that became the model for all wars. Kill civilian men; kill women, kill children. Starve babies and children to death as we're doing in Yemen. The Korean War was distinguished as the U.S. used carpet bombing, deliberately aiming at civilian targets - schools, hospitals, residential districts were great. And that was repeated in the heaviest bombings in history in other nearby countries, as in Vietnam where the U.S. also offered poisons from the air. (I don't know the records of Russia and China because they haven't fought enough wars to tell us much.)

That savagery was repeated all over the middle east.  And all over the world people, especially children, are dying from late explosions almost every day.
The Iraq war was won largely by the mass murder of civilians and children.
This isn't the war of the future or of a century ago. This is the war of now.

(Curiously, when the Canadian air force intensely bombed Libya, I can't remember any Canadian news medium with a report of who they bombed. However, it was under American command.)

Anger in Latin America seems to be on the rise. And that has something to do with the brutal treatment by American (and Canadian) capitalists who have for over a century abused Latin Americans. And you will note that Canadian governments and news media rarely even mention such action in those countries.

Of course there are migrants, many of them victims of wars we have created.
Many of them victims of climate change that is destroying their food supply. Many of them are victims of crises we have created (like the Latin Americans at the U.S. border.)

And our world pretty much doesn't give a damn about the world we are destroying. Governments, for the most part, cooperate with capitalists and dictators to make the destruction even greater.

Canada's Liberals are an example of the destruction we are creating. And the United Conservatives (are there also disunited ones?) want even more destruction.

Well, it's a nice thought. And I quite agree that Chinese universities should be more honest. But how do we do it? We can't simply force China to liberate it's universities  - unless, of course, we invaded. And that would be the biggest war in history.

I also suggest we take a look at our universities to see how they do on being broad-minded about teaching the faults of capitalism in their Business programmes. Indeed, most of our universities are very much under the control of big business, and big business makes sure they don't stray.

Some years ago, I was invited to a meeting hosted by the very wealthy chairman of my university's board of governors. (Most of them were also wealthy or friends of the very wealthy.) I had no warning of what the meeting was about, and was dazzled by the offer of becoming president of the university.

Oh, the goodies were wonderful - my house paid for, a very big salary....

But I wondered why they were so keen on me. I had no administrative training or experience. But it gradually dawned on me. All they wanted was a president who would do whatever the businessmen on the board told me to do.

So I turned it down. However, I later learned that many universities operate that way - with all control and decisions in the hands of big business- and with the appointment of presidents who will be patsies.

The U.S. war on Syria, like most U.S. wars, is illegal under international law. That's been true of almost all wars since 1945. And, like ALL U.S. wars, it is fought to steal a country's wealth, and hand it over to American billionaires.

Broadly, that's what all the British empire wars were about. But Americans will have to rush to catch up on Britain's score of over 400 million murdered.

Canadians and American do a lousy job on education. In particular, they do a lousy job in public education. That's not because of bad teaching. It's because rich people divert a good deal of education into their private schools, and are very, very reluctant to pay for public schools. (Oh, the private schools also get lots of funding from governments who really, really like rich people.)

I remember my first year as a student in Grade 1. The class was too large for that grade or for the ones that would follow. Result? Only one, a girl, made it to university. The rest, including me, flunked out, starting about grade 4.

My first teaching job was with a grade 7 class of 32.  Far, far too many for any class.

But,  hey, kids who were low on brains but whose parents had money could attend classes that were small and with lots of teacher attention.

A final note --- what is the future of Alberta?

Well, the oil industry in that province is doomed. Leading companies are moving out to the U.S. Very soon, Alberta will be a dead land of filthy and poisonous oil fields.

And no, the oil barons will not clean up. That will be the job of at least a generation of Albertans, maybe more. And the oil companies will not pay for it. The many, many billions of dollars that will cost will have to come from Canadian taxpayers.

It's not Canada that is destroying the industry. It's the oil companies that are laying workers off. And it's the oil industry that will, in the not too distant future, destroy the province.

The oil barons aren't stupid. (If they want stupidity, they can always turn to the United Conservative Party). The oil barons know the threat that oil poses to all humanity in this world. What they want is to keep oil alive for as long as possible - even if that risks destroying all of us.

So what they do is to buy off Alberta newspapers and Conservatives. And all those Albertans who worship the industry will bleat like sheep on the way to the slaughterhouse.

It's not Canada that threatens Alberta. It's the Albertans who threaten themselves - and all of us.

Contrary to  common belief, Canada is and always has been a quite racist country. There have been blacks in Canada since the age of slavery. (Yes, there was a long period of slavery followed by an even longer one of exploitation and rejection. Until very recently, they were forced to live in black ghettos, and denied most employment.  It was only in the late 1950s in Quebec that Blacks were permitted to teach in public schools. Nor is that treatment restricted to blacks.

It applied to our native peoples, to Chinese who were murderously exploited in building our railways, then largely confined to ghettos. Exceptions were made for those Chinese who were allowed to live in "Chinese laundries" where parents and children had to work long and hard hours to make a bare living.

In 1914, Sikhs coming to Canada were turned back even though it was well known that a German warship was hunting somewhere off our Pacific coast. ( In Canada's recent   election, the NDP's Sikh leader was widely criticized for wearing a turban.)

Canada has even discriminated against foreign dress habits - as in Quebec today where Muslims are being discriminated against - by law.

Quebec is so obsessed with maintaining the superiority of the French language ( and destroying it's once large English population) that storekeepers are instructed not to serve customers in English. As well, English signs are discouraged and, in many situations, illegal. And, as the item above shows, even French people who are capable of speaking English can find themselves in trouble. (And since when does a province have the right to decide who is permitted to immigrate?)

Curiously, English movies have never been banned. Even when I was a child going to a Saturday movie at the local French church hall with it's 95 + %  French audience, all the French kids would boo if a French film was shown.

NATO is close to dead. And that began a long time ago when the U.S. coerced it into declaring war on North Korea. That was a war purely for American benefit. It's real purpose was to defeat North Korea, and make it a base for the U.S. to invade China. And that was in order to make China and its huge market a part of the American empire.  Canadians died to make American billionaires happy.

The enemy are drug gangs that actually outclass the Mexican Mexico's police. But these drug gangs are useful to Donald Trump in portraying most Latin Americans as drug dealers.  He uses them to blame almost all Latins for the drug trade, giving him a (lying) reason to stop all Latins, most of whom are fleeing from the poverty and hunger the U.S. has imposed on Latin America.

https://thetyee.ca/Analysis/2019/11/06/BC-Universities-Like-Corporations/

The same is largely true of universities across Canada - and more so in the U.S.
And there's not a whimper from the professors and the administrators.

I learned that lesson early in my teaching days. Many, many, many professors are fully occupied with their own egos.  And many, many, many have no idea  how to teach. There is NO teacher training for university professors. We make it a point to train public school teachers.  But not profs.

I have known only one professor who was fired because of his teaching.  It was appallingly bad. Whole classes would quit the room after his first class. And in all my years of teaching, I cannot remember a professor whose annual work review included the quality of teaching. I well remember one who, when I gave him this teaching assignments for the year, said in shock, "Graeme, I can't do that. If I taught those classes I would have to live in Montreal"

"Oh, where were you planning to live?"

"In Boston."

I often think of how little I remember from classes in the BA and even from one teacher in the MA and (the worse one) in the Ph.D.  There are some very, very bad teachers we turn loose in our universities.

Speaking to public audiences happens - sometimes - but not for as much as one would think. No. All prestige comes from publication (usually to small numbers of readers. And the greatest sin is writing critical reviews of them. I remember well standing beside a leading U of T professor while we were answering questions to a Senate hearing. I had recently written a review of his book. And one sentence was mildly critical.

He whispered to me, "I saw what you said. You said I had a mistake in my book. I won't forget that."

There are, indeed, many professors who avoid teaching whenever possible.
Ain't no ego-building prestige in it. Nope. The wealthy on university board can have all the self-serving control they like.

All that matters to too many professors is their egos.

Nov.5: The Insanity of Greed

(Sorry this blog is so late. I know I did send it out on time. But for some reason it stung it's tongue at me and stepped back.)

https://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/scientists-declare-climate-emergency-1.5347486

Not to worry.  Premier Doug Ford of Ontario says there is no climate change. And he has a high school leaving certificate. So there. And the Conservative party agrees with him.

The reality is it is happening. And we have no idea how much or how little time we have to deal with it. And the task facing us is huge, so huge that any efforts we have made so far are piddling. At our present pace, there is not the slightest chance this planet will survive.

As well, there will be tremendous suffering before the crash. In fact, that suffering is already happening. That's why we are seeing migrants from countries  whose food supplies are dying. (You know, like the ones that nobody wants in their countries. So we kick their rubber lifeboats back out to sea.) That number is going to climb much, much higher. And climate change is the reason that someday soon the wildfires of California will destroy Los Angeles and San Francisco.

But the good part is we will die protecting the profits of the oil industry.

______________________________________________________________

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/amazon-illegal-loggers-kill-indigenous-guardians-of-forest-1.5346095

This happens every day, all over the world - including Canada. Indigenous people surely have a right to control their own forests. But the lumber barons don't give a damn about the rights of others. Nor do they give a damn that we need those trees to slow down climate change. But all the lumber barons care about it profits --NOW.

It happens in Canada, too, with the added curse that the lumber companies also spray poisons on the trees to encourage growth. Alas! They also spray animal and human life. Check out New Brunswick for an example of that. (The provincial medical officer warned people about the health danger in this. So the Irvings, with their wimpy, politicians, fired her.  (What  slimy Liberals and Conservatives New Brunswickers always vote for.)
_________________________________________________________________

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/susan-rice-the-national-interview-trump-impeachment-canada-china-huawei-1.5346230

Susan Rice should get stuffed.

We should not be electing politicians who always kiss up to what the U.S. wants.  We do it all over the world. And that's what a colony does. The U.S. is as bloody and ruthless as any empire in history. Britain is now a major kissup for it. Canada has taken the side of the U.S. in mass murder in Guatemala and all over Latin America. It takes the U.S. side with a Saudi Arabia as anti-democratic and murderous as they come. We sent Canadians to die in Korea and Afghanistan, wars that had nothing to do with us. In the middle east, we made the U.S. happy by bombing Libya and Syria.

Were Libya and Syria bombed to defend Canada? No. Neither country was a threat to Canada - or to the U.S. We murdered a great many people - no - not for our friends in the U.S., no, no. This was for America's oil billionaires who own the government of the U.S. - and the government of Canada. (And they don't pay a damn cent in income taxes.)

Canada also provide logistic and training services for the U.S. and it's allies in Syria. And some 40 Canadians died for that.

Our news services should be telling who we are murdering and why.

By the way, if I am critical of the Liberals and Conservatives, it's because both of those parties in Canada were founded to cater to the greed of business. The opposing Liberal party was the 'gofer' of big business in Toronto.

Ever wonder why Canada is having a hard time getting a seat on UN agencies?
Wonder no more. Ever since 1945, Canada has been a bumboy for the American Empire. Canada has killed at the wish of U.S. billionaires - Korea, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria. And Canadians have died at the wish of U.S. billionaires. And Canada has helped to deliberately impoverish countries in Latin America to make them cheap labour for American and Canadian billionaires.)

Almost all wars in history have been fought to make the very, very rich even richer. That's what World War One was about. That was what Britain was about when it deliberately (and illegally)  destroyed German finances after World War One. And that[s what made it possible for a Hitler to rise to power.

Today, the whole world is being plundered to please the super rich. Check their incomes (as much as it's possible to check them.) They are actually getting richer while their victims, including us, are steadily losing money. Meanwhile, we  have to pay for all the wars with  our lives and with our money because our super-rich want even more countries to plunder.

The end of all this? One hell of a crash. But don't worry. Our super-rich have enough of our money to make things even worse for the rest of us.

And then there's the final climate crash that our  super-rich refuse to give a damn about.  And the Canadian Liberals and Conservatives are right up there, kissing American and Canadian billionaire bums.

https://thetyee.ca/News/2019/11/04/May-Resigns-as-Green-Leader/

I'm sorry to see this. But the reality is that neither the Greens nor the NDP take our future nearly seriously enough. And neither of them takes a nearly hard enough line against a super-rich class that impoverishes most of us and that has driven us to the edge of economic and social disaster, a disaster that is probably very close.

The super-rich have enormous power in Canada, the U.S., Britain.... Indeed, they ARE the real governments of those countries. They are also too greedy (and/or
too stupid) to see where they're taking us. And where they have taken us since 1945 has been constant wars and mass murder. (And we  have been brainless enough to let them hide their tax money in secret accounts. Does that cost us?
You bet. The current amount of this hidden money - just for Mr. Irving and other of his buddies in Canada - is 245 BILLION dollars. And that's money we don't have for health or housing or schools or a livable minimum wage.)

But we do have enough be bumboys for our billionaires, U.S. and Canadian, in Latin America.

In the case of the NDP, this weakness is linked to it's dependence on union support. That still leaves the NDP well behind the Liberals and Conservatives in funding -  and it limits how tough they can get in an election. Of course. The Unions, like it or not, have economic ties to our current business structures.

The old CCF had to line up with the NDP in order to raise money. But the price was that it lost the power to deliver a moral government that was dedicated to meet the needs of all the people.

Of course, it was Saudi Arabians who attacked New York in 9/11. People involved in that and who planned it have long about been named -  and they were Saudis. The Saudi government may not have been involved. But, yes, people close to it were the killers.

But    - Saudi Arabia was an important friend to the U.S. in the middle east. (Indeed, it and  Israel may have been the only friends of the U.S. So it had to be somebody else's fault. Thus. Osama Bin Laden. (Actually, Bin Laden WAS a Saudi, and a very high placed one until he fled to Afghanistan. He changed his citizenship about 1992). And that's the excuse the U.S. gave at first for its very unwise attack on Afghanistan.

The U.S. spreads democracy? Like hell it does. The whole of American history is one of murder and plunder - starting with American aboriginals. Then, for over a century. plundering Latin America. It used two world wars to plunder Britain (which itself had just plundered much of the world.) The U.S. wants to bring democracy to Cuba? It had it's chance to do so from 1920 or so on. But it  preferred hired thugs who tortured and murdered on a grand scale - and, of course, the American mobs. It's best friends are a family of murderous dictators in Saudi Arabia.

And Canada is the dog that yaps and whines at the heels and wealthy Americans.
_________________________________________________________________

https://truthout.org/articles/indigenous-abortion-access-shouldnt-be-tied-to-western-religious-values/

Odd. The people most opposed to abortions are white, Evangelical Christians. Oh, they believe the Bible, every word. Odd, though, they're also the ones most in favour of murdering millions all over the world.
_____________________________________________________________

An Afterthought

A striking feature of the American political scene is the role of those Christian American people who call themselves Evangelicals. Indeed, these are the ones whose votes largely were the ones who elected Trump. And it was largely the white ones who elected him. And they are still far the most numerous of Trump's supporters. Indeed, they are the ones who could elect him for a second term/

So who are they?

I got interested in them many years ago when a friend became an evangelical preacher. I thought even that strange. We occasionally went out together to do some shooting in the country. He fired a shot as we got out of the car. His target was - a large animal on the low branch of a tree? A child? I couldn't tell at that range. The whole day was like that.

On the drive home, he was stopped for a traffic offence. As the policeman approached, he opened the door to make a grab at the policemen and punch him. I had to jump over to pull him back. Call me naive, but it thought that unusual behaviour for a clergyman.

My curiosity roused, I visited the church that had bred him. It was showbiz, pure showbiz. And the preacher gave a sermon that pretty well condemned regular Christian churches. They were doomed to hell for the final coming. Only evangelicals would be saved.

At the end of it, there was a prayer for which we were all told to close our eyes. And, with eyes still closed, we were invited to move to the pulpit to be saved.

'Yes', said the preacher. 'Come this way. Thank you madam. Bless you Sir.'

But, sinner that I am, my eyes weren't closed And I saw that nobody had moved.
Eventually and after some  more show biz, a few did go forward.

After the service, I talked to a few of the  faithful. They were obsessed with going to heaven. And the only way to go to heaven and live forever with God
was to be an evangelical.

Then there were the evangelical preachers - like Billy Graham who brought salvation to the White House. No. He never, never criticized the world murdering by American presidents and congressmen. He never criticized their bad treatment of the American people He praised them as agents of God - just as the evangelicals of today praise Trump for his brutal treatment of migrants fleeing the horrors of being Latin American colonials in the American Empire.

And unlike many of America's black preachers, they never had a word to say about racism in the U.S.

Indeed, among the American preachers, it was pretty clear that God was a (white) American.

How could they join in praise of what was virtually an American God when America was slaughtering innocent people all over the world in the millions?
(Mind you, until 1950 or so, the British clearly understood that God was British and the Empire was God's gift to wealthy Brits. So that sort of thinking did spread into the more conventional churches as in the British

Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the free, How shall we extole thee, Who are born of thee, Wider and still wider, Shall thy bounds be set, God who made the mighty, Make thee mightier yet!!, God who made thee mighty, Make thee mightier ye

That's why the British and Americans didn't have to pay any attention to the Ten Commandments, among them, "Thou shalt not kill." (God made them so murderous that the British Empire killed over 400 million. Americans have yet to catch up. But I'm sure they will, with God's help.)

From all I've seen, Evangelicals are the least Christian and the most self righteous killers of any this world has seen. And, oh, they love  Donald Trump. And, oh, they show no sign of human intelligence. That's why Trump - a man   without any trace of Christian principle,  could still be a contender for another term.

In fighting to save the oil patch of Alberta, the Conservatives are fighting a losing battle. The only thing the Conservatives can do is to preserve an industry which is going to collapse anyway - and, as things are going, an industry which might well destroy us in its own greed.

Alas! The Liberals aren't much better.

All parties desperately need a plan to create a new Alberta economy. And they don't have much time.

Hong Kong was the friendliest and most interesting city I  have ever seen. And my students there were among the best I ever had. (The British rule was pretty loathsome, of course. But one could often ignore it.)

But I fear it is well past the point of no return.

In Montreal, I spent grades 5 to  8 in a school. ironically named Peace Centennial, that was noted for its bullying - and worse.
Girls were raped in the playground. Big kids repeating grades routinely set up after school street fights with small kids. ( I was one of the small kids.)  One of our students became the last man in Canada to be hanged for murder. And that was while he was still very young.

And oh, one of the girls was worse.

But the kids are getting much, much worse. (When I taught grade 7. I taught two boys - bullies - who were killed in gun fights with police while still in their teens.) And the victims of bullies often suffer for the rest of their lives.

This is a serious and spreading problem.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/opinion/opinion-bullying-rob-benn-frenette-1.5335031

Okay. I'll confess. In grade 7, another kid and I used to ridicule the wimpiest kid in class. And I have no doubt that destroyed his education. In grade 9, two boys in my class stole a doctor's bag with drugs and hypodermic needles. (He was the boy they also held out by his ankles from a third-floor window.) One lunch hour in class they pulled down his pants and injected drugs into him. That boy spent the rest of his life hiding in fear.

We have to take this seriously and deal with it.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/nov/02/schoolchildren-killed-by-roadside-bomb-in-afghanistan

I have no idea, of course, of who set that bomb. What I do know is that this war is essentially a civil war of one region against another. It has nothing to do with the U.S.  The U.S. is there only to grab Afghanistan resources and to exploit its position. Worse, even the U.S. admits it cannot win.l

So why doesn't it get out? Why does it go on killing innocent people? After all, there's no sign the U.S. gives a damn about the people of Afghanistan. It cares even less than did the Russians who killed the same people the U.S. is now killing.

Russian killing didn't work. American killing has not worked any better. There is a problem in Afghanistan. But 20 years of U.S. killing prefaced by many years of Russian killing have not solved any problem. No killing is going to do that.

What this needs is UN negotiations between the two sides organized by countries who are not interested only in plundering the country.
_______________________________________________________________
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019/oct/31/unaoil-executives-admit-paying-multimillion-dollar-bribes

Let's get real. The U.S. is NOT a democracy. All of it's governments have been elected by big money. Right from the start, America's government were devoted to serving land speculators. Thus the massive slaughter of indigenous men, women and children.

Big business has always bought American politicians. The only hope now would be the election of Bernie Sanders as president. But that is not likely.

Canada? All of its prime ministers have been Liberal or Conservative. And all have lived on the take from capitalists in Canada, Britain, and the U.S.

And the capitalist-owned news media of both countries have always lied.

Democracy? Get real.

https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2019/oct/31/the-children-labouring-in-malawi-fields-for-british-american-tobacco

Terrible?

It's not that long ago that Canada employed very young children to work long hours at low, low pay. Ditto for the U.S. and Britain. In fact, 6 year olds commonly worked a 15 hour day for pennies.

Capitalism is not nice to most people.
_________________________________________________________________
https://www.thenation.com/article/migrant-mediterranean-salvini-rescue/

This is such a crisis as the world has never seen before. These people are not migrants who risk drowning for the fun of it. Their world is being destroyed by climate change - and by us. And it's going to get much, much worse.

This is no time for racism in the U.S. or Canada or Europe.

My understanding of Christianity is faulty. But I cannot think of any commandment that tells to leave non-Christians die in those countries we have been destroying.

(Of course, it is arguable that we have never been Christians, and don't really give  a damn.)
________________________________________________________________

Conservative and Liberal politicians don't give much of a damn about education. (well, yes, they often do give a damn about the private schools. That's partly because the superwealthy who buy Conservative and Liberal politicians send their children to private schools.)

Public schooling has always been underfunded. And university is a disaster area where children are forced to run up enormous debts that they will have to pay for through most of their working lives.

The British people, especially the aristocracy of Britain in 2019 - and right through World War 2, had nothing but contempt for Jews. The Balfour plan was not to find a plan for them but to get rid of them at the expense of the Palestinians, The whole creation of Israel in 1948 (by Canada and the US among others) was not to help Jews. It was simply to dump them away from us God-
fearing Christians.

Hitler was certainly vicious in his treatment of Jews. But a reality we have to face is that much of the western world shared that vicious hatred.

The bombing of Pearl Harbour by the Japanese was terrible. But top people in the U.S. were quite happy with it. This gave them  a good excuse to attack Japan, and to and to steal China - which was then largely a British colony.

In the late days of the war, the U.S. instructed Britain to stay away from China. But Churchill defied that because he knew the U.S. wanted to grab a major piece of the British Empire. By this time, the British had no hope of getting back most of China. But, defying the U.S., Churchill managed to get back Hong Kong.

The U.S. used the two world wars to destroy Britain as a commercial competitor. That was particularly true of the oil industry.

And then the American super-rich took over Canada.
