As American intervention in Venezuela comes closer, the western news media have generally - - lied. The U.S. is not intervening to save democracy. The U.S. doesn't give a damn about democracy It long ago destroyed democracy in Guatemala. It did a number on Chile. One of its best friends is the world's most undemocratic country - Saudi Arabia.
But none of this is coming up in our commercial news media. No. Venezuela is evil. Venezuela is incompetent. To get honest and informed news, it's necessary to go to sites like the following. NACLA is an organization of scholars who focus on Latin America.
So what's the real story on Latin America? What is the U.S. up to?
The story goes back to 1900. That's when the U.S. began a long, long series of wars with Latin America. No. It wasn't to establish democracy. No. It wasn't to build up the Latin American economies. The wars were to put Latin American countries under the thumb of American billionaires and their corporations. (with Canadian billionaires and their corporations shyly joining in.)
The result was masses of low paying jobs in mines and agriculture, little education, no social services, lots of dictatorships. and utter misery for places like Cuba, Chile, Guatemala where, in the 1950s and 60s some 200,000 people were murdered to make American billionaires happy. Venezuela is next because it has lots and lots of oil. As well, the U.S. is continuing it's old game of nailing down what it sees as its own empire whose colonies include all of Latin America - and Canada. That's why Canada's Trudeau is included in the game and is supporting the U.S. Canada is a colony of the American empire.

He has made it quite clear he intends to destroy the Amazon rain forest with all the environmental disaster that will include. Universities sell out to private business? You bet they do. With no public funding, it's very tempting to sell out. I've seen it in the form of faculty who write kiss-up books for the very rich, faculty who write propaganda for news media.... Early in my university teaching career, I was approached by an oil company to write a friendly book for it. Late in my career, I was approached by the very wealthy chairman of our board to be president of the university. (I turned it down because I knew my job would be to serve the board which was made up of wealthy businessmen.)

Though few Canadians realize it, Canada has a long, long and brutal history of racism. It has been aimed at African Canadians, orientals, Jews, Syrians, Italians, you name it. And it's now being revived by some politicians.

Despite years of promises, capitalism has not 'spread the wealth'. Indeed, the power of capitalists to hide their money from taxation and to buy politicians has made us relatively poorer. And nothing is happening to change that. It's quite possible (likely) that we are heading for a crash on a world scale.
Even with the crash, we have spent over two centuries creating a wealthy class beyond anything in history, and one with an indifference to the suffering it causes. It has also led us into the the most destructive wars this world has ever seen and to massive suffering, wars that were planned by and benefitted capitalists while causing horror for the rest of us.
Capitalism has not worked except for a very tiny number. And it is now pushing us into our final world of climate change.
