China - that was a nation in chaos for a couple of centuries - is now a world force in weapons development. In a very short time - a few decades - it has become world class in weapons development. There are many lessons in this. But perhaps the most important one in the short term is that this world cannot possibly survive a war between its major powers.

Frank McKenna is a former premier of New Brunswick who has been better known in recent years as a pitch man for a very, very far right wing propaganda house called the Bilderberg Group. In a recent conference he organized in Ottawa, he advocated the overthrow of democratic government in New Brunswick.
The theme was that politicians don't know how to run a province or a country. The only ones who know are the leaders of big business. He therefore called on business leaders who had left New Brunswick to return to the province, and take over the governing of it.
In other words, we need to put an end to democracy. Amazingly, the news media paid almost no attention to this advice though this is common thinking among business leaders.

On a recent TV talk show in the U.S., the host advised Canada to follow Trump's lead and built a wall on the Canada/U.S. border. Good thinking!
That would keep out American drug smugglers, gangsters, and TV hosts.

Of course the U.S. is planning for such a war. That's why ir has the biggest 'defence' budget in the world. And it's extremely unwise to do so because
1.The cost of this, coupled with the extreme greed of the U.S. ruling glass makes it impossible to provide essential services to the American people.
2, The U.S. is doing this at a time when U.S. power is fading while that of Russia and China is growing.
3. Existing weapons systems on both sides guarantee that such a war would be one of mutual destruction.

As I wrote all the above, I realized how the news has not changed in any important respect since 1945 - and perhaps many, many wars earlier. We have always had to live with powers whose primary motivation was greed, with a national worship of the brutality we inflict on others. And it has always been without regard for the consequences. Trump's abuse of migrants (and a similar abuse by Europeans) is just a milder form of Hitler's destruction of Jews - and one inflicted for the same reason. (it's the invention of someone to hate. it attracts voters who understand nothing - but who will respond to an invitation to hate.And that's as old as time.)
It's now late. And i have to think about the meaning of all this. So i shall pick this up on Friday morning with a blog that's admittedly a bit late - but which might have something useful in it.

Damn! It's Friday morning. And there is an idea floating somewhere in my head.
Somewhere.
One thing is surely evident. Despite efforts by a (small) number of Christians, Christianity has been a failure almost from the start. And what remains of it is twisted and preverse. A U.S. which declares itself Christian has killed at least 30 million people since 1945.
In Korea, in Vietnam, in Afghanistan, in Syria, in much of Latin America, in Iraq, in some 70 plus countries around the world, Americans have killed on a massive scale (with help from Britain and others) Over half of the dead have been civilians. The killing of children has become a primary purpose of war.
In the U.S., the killers get massive support from Christians - especially those super evangelicals who are the major source of Trump support. (Their latest triumph has been at the Mexican border where children are taken from their parents, thousands of children, and locked in wire cages
Whatever the hype might be. the purpose of all the killing has been to increase profits for corporations.
All of this is remarkably similar to the behaviour of the oustanding Christians of the last, several centuries who killed and plundered for Spain and Portugal and Belgium and Britain and France. And when the killing was over, they sent missionaries in to teach them about the love of Jesus.
One of the nations that embarked on the same path was Germany. Hitler was proud to call himself a Christian (Catholic) and, like many Christians before him and after (like the British all over the world and like the US) used hatreds to draw people to his Christian paradise. In Hitler's case, the hatred was one of Jews. The British had contempt for all who were black or oriental, a hatred that justified the killing by guns or starvation of over 300 million people. In the case of Trump, it's hatred of Latin Americans and Muslims. (But our leaders flexible.They can switch hatreds in a flash.)
In short, Hitler's evils were not different from ours. We are the Naziis of our time. And it's a role that's been played by just about every empire that ever existed. (And, to stick my neck out a mile, Israeli treatment of Palestinians comes straight from Hitler's playbook.)
Will Christianity break the pattern of most religions? I see no sign that it will.
