As I wrote the blog for May 7, I felt a profound sadness, like an illness, over the news.
With a leadership that is the servant of the super-rich and super-greedy, the U.S.- and the world - are being dragged into the worst war in history. Quite possibly, it will be the final one.
Wars even now are the bloodiest and most horrible this world has known. And that's a lesson we'll learn when the final step is taken to nuclear war.
Will there be a nuclear war? It is very, very likely. The U.S. cannot win a major conventional war. (This is a country that got creamed in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan. The only way it can win a major war (maybe) is with nuclear weapons - thousands of them - and with thousands coming back from the other side.)
The U.S. is now openly making the threat of exactly that war, primarily aimed at Russia and China. And it has to happen soon because the U.S. seems to be in serious decline.
Who wants this war? It's wanted largely by American capitalists. (For some centuries now just about all wars have been wanted by the super rich. In fact, wars have always been wanted by the super rich even before they were capitalists.)
This is no secret. Even World War Two was essentially a war of the rich against the rich. (No. We did not fight that war because Germans and Japanese were evil. We fought them because our capitalists were evil, too. Nor did we fight it to save the Jews. In fact, we were as anti-semitic as Germans were.) All the wars since then and before have been wars of greed. What did you think Afghanistan was about? Despite the news reports, it had nothing to do with 9/11. It had to do with the greed of American capitalists for Afghanistan resources.
Why did the U.S. invade Vietnam? Most of Latin America? Why do you think it now wants war with Venezuela? With Iran? Hint - American oil barons want to own their oil. (And our news media, as usual, report such wars as being because those countries were evil. Hell, there is no country in the world today as evil as the U.S. It is the illegitimate child of the old British Empire that was as bad as the American empire now is.
Now Trump wants a war with China - based on the very unlikely theory that China deliberately created the current pandemic. The real reason, of course, is because U.S. capitalists (the American people less so) want to rule the world.
Of course, every country has a reason for going to war, a reason that justifies the war. That reason is usually because the other country is "evil". That's been the 'reason' for two thousand years and more. Then, in 1945 with the horror of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, some leaders saw the writing on the wall. They led in the formation of the UN to end wars.
But the U.S. destroyed that with the Korean War. I pass over the American butchery (using international thugs) of men, women, children, clergy, nuns in Guatemala which happened at the same time as Korea but has never made our news. The Korean War was not to defend the south. In fact, the south was governed by a dictator with a gang of ministers who had been allies of the Japanese just a few years earlier.
The purpose of the Korean War was to establish a base to invade China so that American capitalists could plunder it as the British ones had.
And that is still the dream of American capitalists. Would this benefit most Americans? No. This sort of plundering has been going on for over a century by American corporations with the American people getting nothing out of it.
Capitalism has been around a long time. In that time it has murdered uncountable millions. If we are to have any hope for a future, we have to act now to break the stranglehold of the very rich. This was what went through my mind as I wrote about the founding of the UN.
In the 1940s, we had to fight capitalism and war. We didn't. Indeed, we embraced both.
If we are to have any chance for survival, we have to stop war...NOW!
We have monster problems. The environment is one. I know the premier of Alberta tells us that oil is perfectly safe. However, thousands of scientists all over the world, people at least as intelligent as your avrage Alberta premier, think differently.
The premier of Ontario, a very late convert to most environmental problems, still passes legislation that is destroying our environmental survivability.
An American president of crashing stupidity still and daily does terrible damage to this planet. (In fact, that has been true of just about every president of the U.S. That country has a centuries long history of near non-stop war.)
We cannot any more fight wars. We cannot continue to play billionaire games with our environment. But the corruption of our nations is running wild. I don't know what's worse, whether it's capitalists or our own stupidity. But we can't afford it. Indeed, it may alreay be too late.
If we are to survive - if it is still possible to survive - we need to act now. We need to see Conservatives, Liberals, Democrats, Republicans as the miserable and corrupt parties they are - exactly like the British conservatives who spawned them.

schools. So much for public education.
In fact, Bill Gates has no training in education at all. But he does have years of experience in setting up school systems that don't work.
So what did the government of New York do? He immediately set up a government department to work with Gates on privatizing the school system. Of course. In the U.S. you don't need brains (look at Trump). All you need is to be very rich.
And a great many children are going to suffer from this.
(I was a grade school teacher for six years. I also spent some time studying private schools. I know they aren't better - more snobbish, but not better.) American billionaires want to control schools for profit as they now control medical care - and as they want to control everything. The record of that is not a good one. When the U.S. was formed it did not become a democracy. It became the agent of the rich and greedy.

For most of Canadian history, this country's master was Britain. In 1945 that abruptly changed as Canada's master has been the U.S. We now fight American wars as we once fought British wars - Korea, Afghanistan, Libya - we have troops near the Russian border and in Syria - we help to overthrow democratic governments, as in Haiti - Any government the U.S. dislikes in Latin America, such as Guatemala, Venezuela is Canada's enemy too.
