May 31: a special addition to Saturday's blog

even as I was writing yesterday's blog, things got terribly, terribly worse. Now, at least 30 American cities have been caught up in riots against racism - and, perhaps, even more against disillusionment and anger among the American people in general. Increasingly, we can expect to see an American government turning loose the army against it's own people. Indeed, at least one military tank has already entered the fight against an American city.

(As an aside, there have even been violent protests in France against the behaviour of the U.S. government.)

We are watching what could be, and maybe almost certainly is, the collapse of the U.S. nation. And it's not just about American racism. It's about the arrogance and power of the super rich. It's about the failure of America's two political parties to serve anybody but the super rich. It's about the failure of American democracy - a failure that actually began a long time ago with George Washington.

The great danger now is that the U.S., for all the wretchedness of it's two political parties, still has a huge nuclear arsenal. America's super rich might decide  that this is the time to use it on China and Russia. (But, based on it's performance since 1945, I don't think the American conventional military can even consider tackling those countries on it's own.)

Europe might well be rethinking it's relationship with the U.S. as the U.S. becomes the briefest super power in history.

Will the U.S. violence have echos in Canada? Quite possible - even likely.
