We face a world of rapid death and destruction by climate change. We have, maybe, 20 or thirty years to get control. But we are nowhere even close to planning what we have to do - let alone actually doing something. On the contrary, the major powers - led by the U.S. - have been busy killing millions who live in oil countries so that they can steal the oil and pump out even more of it.
And the oil companies, of course, don't pay a cent for these wars. They're all paid for with our tax dollars. And we are fools enough to hand over the billions of dollars that costs. And those billions are used to impoverish nations, starving millions to death with the 'economic sanctions' imposed by the Donald Trumps of this world. And the greatest sufferers from these economic sanctions are the children of countries like Venezuela, Iran, Bolivia.....
We are living through a period even more vicious than the Roman Empire at it's worst. And we are heading for a crash even worse than the fall of Rome. Even worse than Rome have been the modern Romes of our 'Christian' world.
When Hitler rose, we were summoned to fight his evil. Our news media daily wrote of that evil, and of the bravery of the poor British who suffered through the war. In reality, the British at the peak of their imperial power were far, far more murderous and evil and abusive than Hitler. And, as usual, it wasn't all the British who were so evil. It was the upper classes who led the mass murder of over 400,000,000 people with, like the U.S. today, the deliberate starvation of millions all over the world, with a slave trade that made life hell for uncounted millions more, and with a horrible abuse of the British working class right down to children. (The U.S. was - and is - remarkably similar.)
Our heroes in World War Two were people like Winston Churchill who happily murdered millions of innocent people - as in India - by starvation. China today, for all its faults, feeds and houses its people, provides them with medical care, and is a major power. This is the China that, under a long history of British rule, starved, was abused, and plundered by the Winston Churchill's of this world.
Poverty is rising spectacularly over much of the world as the super rich become spectacularly rich in their plunder of the world. We humans have a long history of abuse and exploitation by our self-appointed rulers. It's a long history - with a very short future.
As for the example set by the Christian churches for over 2,000 years, "Jesus wept."

Winston Churchill, for all his image, was a man of utter contempt for any person that wasn't white. And, for all the image he became in World War 2, he had nothing but contempt for anyone, even white, who was not, like him, a child of the British aristocracy.

The U.S., if it's very, very lucky, will survive as at least a sort of democracy. My guess is that it won't. What's more likely, is the rise of a police state - and very, very soon. The constitution will disappear. That's not a matter of guessing. No matter who wins, the U.S. will come out of the election as a form of dictatorship by the the super-wealthy. And it's not impossible something similar could happen with Canada.
The very rich already own the Republicans and the majority of Democrats in the U.S. - just as they own the Liberals and Conservatives in Canada. It's now just a short step to a police state.

And now the part I don't want to write. For a start, the Canadian Legion will hate me for it. In fact, this is in no way a criticism of those who have served Canada in wars. They served, and did it at terrible cost. But it's also not a 'three-cheers' for war that most leaders of the Legion seem to love.
It's also a subject I've touched on before.
In 1900, Canada sent troops to fight a war that had nothing whatever to do with Canada. So why did Canada send them? It sent them because Canadian big business was heavily dependent in those days on the British wealthy for a market and for investment. And so it was that Canadians were sent to kill and die in a fully unjustifiable war against the indigenous people of South Africa, and their Dutch settlers. What reason was given? We told our soldiers that they were going to 'serve the King", whatever the hell that means.
It was actually a war so wealthy Brits could steal the gold mines of South Africa, and at the same time force the native South Africans to work at dirt cheap wages, and to live as an inferior people.
South Africa was no threat to Canada or Britain. But Canadians died to enrich thieving British billionaires. And, no doubt, everybody sang God Save the King.
And why did Britain put pressure on Canada to fight in that war?
It was because Britain knew that a war in Europe was coming - and it wanted a precedent for Canadians to kill and die in British wars to enrich the British super wealthy.
Then came World War 1. This was really a war between the capitalists of various European nations. And that is all that it was about - greed. And all the capitalists of Europe fought the war on that basis.
Of course, Canadians needed a little more encouragement. So our news media spread the word that capitalist countries like Germany were evil. And, oh, they were a threat to the king, God bless him. So Canadians signed and thousands died to satisfy the greed of British and French capitalists. Yes. They were, they were told, fighting to defend the Christian virtues of the royal family.....
No one nation was responsible for starting that war - it was Britain, it was France, it was Germany, Austria - all were major players. That's why at the peace, no country was to be penalized.
But Britain and France, prodded by their leading capitalists, placed crushing penalties on Germany and Austria - of course. It was done to destroy German and Austrian capitalist competition. And that is what laid the ground for the rise of Hitler. (Though he called himself a national socialist, Hitler was, in fact, very close to the leading German capitalists.)
British, French and American capitalists just loved Hitler during his rise. He was going to stop the spread of communism. Indeed, the Rockefeller family in the U.S. supplied Hitler with all his oil fuel FOR THE WHOLE WAR, right up to 1945. Did our governments know that? Of course they did. You can't hide all those tankers for all those years.
When the U.S. entered the war, it had nothing to do with fighting German aggression. The U.S. entered it to get control of middle east oil fields for it's capitalist friends and, hopefully, the get control of the old, British exploitation of the Chinese.
I remember, when I was very young, the boys from my father's scout troop coming to say goodbye, proud in their uniforms - and then my father off into the navy.
They thought they were doing it for abstractions like their country, or the royal family. That's the kind of propaganda Canada fed them. They were, of course, being used to make our capitalists richer.
Then came Korea, another war that had nothing to do with Canada. It was a war fought to occupy North Korea as an American base to invade China, and drive it back to the horrors of British plunder, but this time carried out by American capitalists. I well remember the Canadians who went there. I was just a few years younger than them. They died not to bring democracy to anybody or to stamp out evil. Indeed, quite without realizing it, they were serving evil.
Then there was Afghanistan where young Canadians were, again, cannot fodder for American and Canadian billionaires. And oh, all over Canada we had highways of heroes. Yes, we were proud of our gallant lads. In fact, the war was illegal. And we were killing Afghans, mostly civilians, of stunning courage. They were the ones who had fought off and defeated the Russians. They were people who fought and still fight to this day with amazing courage against the U.S and Britain. Their losses, for almost fifty years, have been brutal.
But, as always, we have glamorized even that war. And so it is with our kissing up to the U.S. while overthrowing the elected government of Haiti, while our capitalists plunder the mines and foods of Latin America, while we cooperate with the U.S. in trying to plunder Syria, and Iran.....
And we are even now, considering assisting the U.S. in destroying China to satisfy the greed of our master.
None of this is a criticism of our veterans. We lied to them. We abused what they had won by sacrifice. They did and will do what WE have been doing for over a century - killing under the delusion that we are fighting evil when the reality is that WE are the evil. And we are now on the verge of entering the greatest and final evil.
No. I have no criticism whatever of our veterans. They served, and they did it at terrible cost to themselves. Well - one criticism. The Legion is unduly guilty of seeing war as glorious. That's why it invariably supports every war that comes along. It should give some serious thought to criticizing our wars so the their children and ours will not have to suffer as they did.
If billionaires want wars, let them to the fighting - and not spend their wars as they usually do by getting daddy's help to put them in a safe office.
As for the rest of us, it's time we started to get serious about the brutality and Hitlerian evil of our capitalism.
