The Guardian has long had a reputation of being the most honest major newspaper in the world.  (And the most intelligent). That's quite a contrast with almost all the commercial news media of North America. The city I live in, Canada's capital, has a newspaper that's a disgrace even by North American standards.

Even those Canadians who give a damn about Latin America have no sense of the suffering that corporations have imposed on those people.  Low pay, brutal governments, lack of social services, plundering by capitalists (both American and, yes, Canadian). Under horrible conditions imposed by American billionaires and their Canadian puppet buddies, those people suffer terribly.

And note that Canadian governments and capitalists have long played a   role as kissup to American killers. Betcha never read about that in the Financial Post.

Our newspaper in Ottawa has only rarely mentioned Greta Thunberg. It's editorial on election day advised us to vote Conservative. I have no idea why.
In general, almost all North American news media are not to be trusted. Canada is particularly awful because of the Irving press in New Brunswick and the widespread ownership by National Post in the rest of the country.  However, it is quite possible the U.S. is even worse.

The U.S., for thirty years, kept murderous thugs in power in Cuba. In power, they murdered, tortured on a grand scale. Nobody even pretended this was a democracy. In fact, to a considerable degree, it was ruled by the U.S. mafia. The Cuban people suffered poverty, brutality.....

Get real. That's what empire's are about. And this one allowed American billionaires to plunder Cuba.

Now Trump is turning up the heat. The U.S. has never accepted the idea of Cubans controlling their own country - and it's now on a major campaign to get back to the good old days of plunder and   brutality.

Donald Trump, like virtually all presidents of the American empire and like imperial rulers of any country, are thieves and plunderers with a dreadful record human destruction.  They are our Hitlers of today. And no, that is not an exaggeration.

Haiti once did have an honest government. So the U.S. overthrew it. Canada then generously threw in troops as 'peacekeepers' - as part of its normal policy in Latin America to do whatever the U.S.tells it to do.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/oct/24/britains-despicable-history-of-slavery-needs-teaching-and-commemorating

Empires exist largely for one purpose. To give the wealthy of the ruling country the cheapest possible labour. That's what the British, French, Dutch, German  empires were all about. That's what the American empire is all about.

Most of the empires used slavery. Today, the U.S. wealthy rely on the semi slavery of regions like Latin America. And the Canadian wealthy happily join them.

And, like the U.S. and Canada, empires also exploit their own people as cheap labour with a shortage of even basic services. Thus the refusal of American governments to supply medicare to the American people, to keep millions in poverty and hopelessness.....

There is no money for most of the population. But there's enough to allow billionaires to pay no income taxes at all. And we wimps accept that.

The huge gap between most incomes and those of the very rich is taking us straight into an economic crash. That's particularly true in the Americas and in western Europe.

In Ottawa, where I live, racial differences seem to be very great. But, so far as I have seen, the 'different' ones are not discriminated against. Is this an accurate opinion?

In Montreal, the discrimination against anybody who looks different hangs like a dark cloud over the city. Even I, a white with roots that go back in Quebec to 1650, can never again feel at home in that city. (I sinned by having an English-speaking great grandfather. Of course, it's not a great problem unless I talk.)

The U.S. was not really much interested in the war in Europe. When it did (very late) decide to join the war, it's main purpose was to steal the British Empire in China. That's what it's war on Japan was all about.

In fact, the only reason there could be a D Day landing is because Russia was tying up most of the German forces. (And that's why Russian losses in World War 2 were far the largest in the world at 24 million.) Without the Russians, the war with Hitler would have been lost.
So American lend-lease actually benefited the U.S. at least as much as it did Russia.

The oil industry murders - and on a grand scale. Indeed, most of our major corporations happily kill. Well,  they don't do the killing. No. They pay politicians to do it. But among all the killers in history, modern capitalism stands tall.

While I find Paul Craig Roberts can go a little over the top on some comments,
he is an analyst of great experience and contacts.

'defence' spending is why American can not have medicare, American children can't  have decent education, and very poor Americans have to sleep in the streets.

Quebec's banning of religious symbols worn by civil servants is a national disgrace.  Essentially, this is a racist law aimed at Muslim women who wear the hijab. And Quebec is a profoundly racist province, dedicated to white and French-speaking citizens.
The law is almost certainly illegal. But federal parties have not had the courage to strike it down.

The attitude of Quebec is it is only for Quebecois pur laine (pure wool.) Anybody who is different is not welcome.

And then there's a big worry. The U.S. with the most expensive military in history, has not performed all that well since 1945. The Korean war, intended to give the U.S. a base to attack China, failed in that purpose. Vietnam, a relatively small and poor country and divided country overcame the U.S. with all its expensive aircraft and poison chemicals. In almost twenty years of fighting, the expensive U.S. military has not been able to match a divided Afghanistan though the opposition is small and poorly equipped.

The U.S. can certainly kill a large number of people. But it's weak on winning. And crashingly greedy and immoral in its treatment of Americans (--those Americans who aren't rich.)

And let's not kid ourselves. In the view of the Liberals and Conservatives at least, Canada is a part of the American Empire.
