March 30: a bad, bad, day.

News about Venezuela remains pretty fragile. Consider - U.S. billionaires (with Canadian billionaire hangers-on) see Latin Americans as their very own cheap labour. That's  what all empires do. Like all empires, it also keeps Latin America as a very cheap source of resources - as in oil and mining and agriculture. And, like all empires, it has been murdering and torturing Latin Americans from the start - well over a hundred years ago and in numbers I have never seen - but which must go far, far beyond a few hundred thousand.    (If you include the theft of California and Texas from Mexico, that makes it more like 180 years ago.)

So why and how aren't we hearing about what's  happening? Putin has thrown down one hell of a challenge to the U.S. And Putin, unlike Trump, is not a man who acts rashly. And Trump,  who almost always acts rashly, is amazingly quiet about Venezuela. (We get far, far more from him about the Mexican border.)

What is it Putin hopes to achieve? (He doesn't need Venezuela oil.)  Why is China showing interest? Is this the first step of a wider plan to weaken the American hold on it's empire? (That seems a much more dangerous goal than a Putin would plan. The U.S. does that sort of thing all the time - as in Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and 80 or so other countries around the world. But that has never been Putin's style.) So what's the game plan? And why aren't our news media asking the obvious questions?

I lived in a province in which the local oil and forest baron sprayed his forest with Roundup. And when the provincial medical officer warned about this, she was simply disposed of. And so far as I know, the spraying is still going on and, since the  the province's oil baron and forest owner has never shown any interest in dealing with this, it will go on a lot more.

I suspect that a study of Canada would show similar results. But it's not possible to do much about it. Let's get real.

The very wealthy refuse to pay income tax. And when you're very wealthy, that means a loss to the country of huge sums to billionaires. It's the same story we meet when we deal with public education. That has been run on the very cheap from the start.

We face tremendous social demands.  But the world of greed isn't going to pay a cent. And that is going to lead to one hell of a crisis. In the U.S., it's made worse by absurd overspending  on 'defence' - which really means for offence that benefits the rich - who won't pay for it.

Some people are critical of Jews because they are racists.  That was the case in Germany - and over much of the world in the 1940s. But today you don't need to be a racist to criticize Israel. Israel is now the racist state. And, for a great many Jews, Israel is not the society they cheered for in 1948.

What can I say, Doug Ford, premier of Ontario, is a lout who just loves looking into mirrors.

Here is a man who refuses to listen to most of the world's top scientists who say we're into a climate change crisis. Doug Ford's reaction has been to dismiss everything they say. He has,  in fact, increased the threat of climate change, and put a man in charge of ignoring it - a man as ignorant as  he is.

Doug Ford, who airily dismisses all the the world's scientists, is a man   with barely more than a high school education (high school plus job training. That's it.)  And he has no training whatever in science.  Think hard....what does this tell us about Conservative voters in Ontario?

________________________________________________________________

The American empire will not last forever, of course. They've all died. They've been doing it for thousands of years. Commonly, like the British Empire, it can become a satellite of the new empire - whatever that might be. And it can happen quickly. Britain went from world power to American puppet  in less than ten years. And Canada, in light of a collapsed Britain, gave up on the British Empire to become an American puppet too. Serving the King was all the rage in 1939. but that become a dead letter very shortly after the war.  (That's why Trudeau very quickly supported the  illegal behaviour of the U.S. in Venezuela. That's why Canada contributed troops to fight American wars in Korea and  Afghanistan. That's why it has had scattered units protecting American interests - as it did with Haiti.)

Canada fought a war in South Africa for Britain - a war that had nothing to do with Canada, and which had no possible justification. That was the old story of being suckered in to fight wars for one's master. The call it 'patriotism'.

I would even argue that Canada had no reason to join World War One. That was Britain's war. It had nothing to do with us. Nor is true that Britain would have done the same for us. In fact, the U.S. threatened Canada with war in 1904 - and Britain absolutely refused to help Canada - even diplomatically. But then 1914 came - and it was all God Save the King.

But now the British Empire is gone. And what Trudeau and his like say is God Save the American president. Canadians died fighting wars for Britain, and now for the U.S. And Canadian business leaders now push Canadian governments to fight wars for the same reason as Canada fought in the boer war - the desire of business leaders (not to fight themselves  - oh no) but to kiss up to American business so they can get a piece of the profits.

We have honoured none of the promises we made to the Canadian people in 1945. The Canadian Legion should have realized this a long time ago. But it didn't and it won't. That's because it is managed by governments and by its leaders to play up a false  patriotism and ignore realities.

So it is in 2019 that the west is still plundering regions like Africa for business profit - all of which goes to billionaires who don't pay taxes. We are killing others and damaging ourselves to create profits for billionaires. And we are doing this in a world in which both sides  have thousands of nuclear missiles.

This is not what Canadians fought and sacrificed and died for in 1939.

And -

Our business leaders seem to have no sense of human survival as they pursue profits with no interest in the consequences. Almost every war in history has been fought to make big money for the already rich. And the rich have never given the slightest sense that this is in any way a problem.

We now live in a world  that can be destroyed within minutes by massive stocks of nuclear weapons. (Yes. We would use them. That's why we have them.) Add to that the fact that our very wealthy are ignoring  climate change because dealing with it might hurt their profits. Thus a Donald Trump and a Doug Ford and a wimpy Trudeau are seriously prepared to end the life of this planet.

We have a ruling class interested only in its own greed, and with no sense of the future.

March 28: A lesson in capitalism

https://www.telesurenglish.net/analysis/10-of-the-Most-Lethal-CIA-Interventions-in-Latin-America-20160608-0031.html

To understand all this, it might help to look at the British Empire in India and China. Why did the British go to all the trouble of conquering those countries? Was it to modernize them? To bring democracy?

Well, no.

The first reason was to steal whatever resources those countries had.   India, for example, had a thriving cotton industry. It also had enormous agricultural resources. British capitalists wanted ownership of all that so they could profit from the sales.

The British also wanted control over the salaries of the Indians and the Chinese so that British capitalists could make all the profits. And that meant the Indians and the Chinese had to be made poor, desperately poor so  that they would work for very, very low salaries.

And, in a move that blended poverty for the Chinese and huge profits for the British, it forced China to accept the opium industry. (Well, British capitalists also impoverished the British people. After all, industries in Britain wanted cheap, cheap labour, so even as wealth poured into Britain, most of the British people had to live in some of the worst slums of Europe, and the survive without education or health care.

A necessary device of capitalism is enforced poverty. The wealthy depend on that poverty to sustain low costs of production. And so the British Empire was all about spreading poverty and stealing resources.

The British Empire was also about racism. After all, the wealthy had to justify their behaviour to themselves. And that meant that British imperialists had utter contempt for the people they enslaved, abused and plundered. Winston Churchill made no secret of his racism - to the extent of allowing over a million of his colonials to died of starvation when most could have been saved.

(Indeed, that racism is still alive and healthy after all these years. the next topic in today's blog deals with racism in today's Europe. And Donald Trump's treatment of Latins and his exploitation of American hatred of them is another sample.)

Latin America is the U.S.  equivalent of the British Empire. It's people must be impoverished so that American capitalists can pay them on the very, very cheap. And there must be no money wasted on frills like education and health care. And U.S. capitalists (and Canadian ones)  must have full and cheap access to the oil of Venezuela. In this case, one of the capitalists might be a Canadian, Mr. Irving of Irving oil, headquartered in New Brunswick, and pretty much the owner of the people of New Brunswick.

This holds true throughout Latin America. This explains the hatred  of American politicians for Cuba. It explains why the CIA murdered 200,000 Maya men, women and children whose crime was that they wanted to control their own country, Guatemala. The CIA also murdered priests,  missionaries and nuns who supported the Maya. It explains why the U.S. supported a murderous dictator for some fifteen years in Chile.

Indeed, the CIA is constantly at work throughout Latin America for assassinations, and the very widespread use of torture. Gotta keep the world safe for billionaires.

Much of the above was never reported in our news media - particularly the murder of 200,000 Maya. Of course not (though Canada's National Film Board had the courage to make a film about a Canadian missionary who was murdered. He was buried  in his home province of New Brunswick - but even the New Brunswick news media didn't give enough of a damn to report it.  Of course not. The New Brunswick News Media are owned by Mr. Irving of Irving Oil.)

Here's a list of U.S. "interventions" in Latin America. Isn't it awful the way those Latin Americas pick on the U.S.?

Or maybe Trump should build a fence to keep Americans out of Latin America.

The current U.S. anger at Venezuela is because Venezuela has the nerve to want to control its own oil fields. It also wants to spoil its people by improving education and (gasp!) incomes.

It's true that Maduro is not a great leader. (I could say the same of a great many U.S. presidents). But that is no business of the U.S. Does Venezuela want to bring in some socialist measures? That is the business of Venezuela. Indeed, Canadians should start looking behind them. Canada has medicare. That's socialist. American politicians are already showing alarm at this spoiling of the Canadian people. Take this seriously.  U.S. billionaires will not tolerate Canadian defiance of its

Prime Minister Trudeau has already supported the American attacks on Venezuela. Of course. When Trump pulls his pants down and bends over, our Liberals and Conservatives rush to give a big, fat kiss.

We are living in dangerous times as those who control the U.S. are determined to accept only their rule of low pay. And Canada, like any other country, is here for the plundering.

March 26:not a good day

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/lisa-thompson-metro-morning-class-sizes-1.5069114

I have taught at the elementary and high school levels. I have taught oversized (more than  30 students) classes. To suggest these are more effective in any way is idiocy. But it is a good way  to fire teachers and cut school budgets.

I grew up and went to school in a very poor district. It was a district in which nobody finished high school. (I was kicked out in grade eleven. And that made me the big success story of my district.) One of the great problems, perhaps the greatest, facing schools is the failure rate of kids who live in poverty. They aren't stupid. But they grow up in an atmosphere that encourages ignorance. That is the challenge facing our schools. And we won't meet it with larger classes. Indeed, we need a serious rethinking of education and how to deal with this problem that blights the lives of millions of children - and which deprives Canada of intellectually skilled people.

Instead of educated children, we get spoiled louts like premier Ford of Ontario who wants to cut education budgets so he can lower taxes on those poor rich people.

I often spoke at private schools for rich kids. I noted that their class sizes were small. I guess rich kids don't need to be resilient.
_________________________________________________________________

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/tasker-ottawa-gun-control-pressure-1.5070589

We are living in a far more violent world - even here at home. And it's going to get a lot worse as much of the world destabilizes - providing a breeding ground for hate-killings. The only possible use for semi-automatic rifles is for killing gatherings of people in, say, mosques - or churches - or theatres....

There is not the slightest possibility that the U.S. will ban personal weapons.  What will Canada do? I am not optimistic.
_______________________________________________________________

I am surprised by the meager news coming out of Venezuela. When I heard of the Russian landing of troops,  I took me hours to track down stories about it. I wondered how this could be. Russian troops had landed - with a supply of missiles - in the heart of the American empire. Our news media didn't think this was important?

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/mar/26/venezuela-call-for-calm-amid-blackouts-and-anti-maduro-protests

This opens the possibility of a Russian clash with the U.S. - though I suspect the U.S. will not be eager for that.

Another possibility is that it means a permanent Russian presence in Venezuela with full control of one of the world's biggest oil fields - and with American oil barons sitting outside and looking on. Indeed, a permanent Russian presence in Venezuela could mean a widening Russian influence in a Latin America which has every reason to hate the U.S. for mass murder, starvation wages, and more than century of American abuse.

So how come we aren't getting more news coverage?

March 23: The Wretched of the Eath Govern It.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/mar/22/trump-provokes-global-anger-by-recognising-israels-claim-to-golan-heights

The U.S. rules the world. Yes, it does. That's why it can take land that doesn't belong to it and give to another country that it doesn't belong to. That's why it can steal Venezuela's oil fields. That's why it has a right  to bomb people in various countries with it's drone bombers. That's why it has a right to take Latin America's resources while keeping Latin Americans in poverty as cheap labour. That's why it had a right to murder 200,000 of Guatemala's native people. That's why it has a right to control Cuban trade to this day.

The United States is an exact duplicate of the British Empire that withered after World War Two. And, like the British Empire, the purpose of the American one is to loot the resources of it's conquests - with all the profit going to its own business leaders.

News media lied about the British Empire, too. As it starved, murdered, plundered hundreds of millions of people, as it destroyed their economies, the empire was always reported as something glorious. And the British soldiers, the ones who did all the killing for pennies a day and who were dumped on the streets at the end of their service were praised as 'gallant lads' which, incidentally, is what Trump constantly does for America soldiers - and for the heroes who sit in non-flying aircraft in the U.S. in order, every day, to bomb civilians, men, women and children,  from drone bombers.

The purpose of all this slaughter is to loot the countries of the people they kill. That's what empire are for - to blunder helpless nations for the benefit of imperial capitalists. Over the years, British and American troops have died - not to serve their countries. No. For all of the splendour of their marching with medals clanking, their only role is to kill innocent people for the benefit of billionaires.

Check all the wars that have ever been fought. Almost all have been fought to benefit the wealthy - who are usually careful enough not to do any fighting themselves. And the best part is that the very wealthy don't pay a cent for these wars. They are paid for by our taxes. The very wealthy don't pay taxes. So, among all the other people  they plunder - they plunder us.

(You think we fight wars because the other side is evil? Forget it.  Wars are certainly evil. But, commonly, both sides are evil. Hitler was evil? You bet. But the British empire was even more evil and murderous. And you think the U.S. went to war in 1941 because of its goodness? In fact, the U.S. used that war to swipe large parts of the British empire, especially in the middle east. It also had a lust to conquer China,  but failed.)

All empires in history have crashed. The British Empire, which was centuries old, crashed in barely ten years. The American Empire will crash, too. Alas! Unlike the earlier empires, the U.S. will go down to the final wire with its thousands of nuclear weapons.

In 1939, we went to war, we thought, to make this a better world. Indeed, we talked constantly of a new world order But none of the major powers had any intention of any such thing. And the Christian churches, in keeping with their limpness of 2,000 years, did nothing.   (Well, in fairness, an American cardinal intervened in the American bombing of Cuba. He blessed the bombs. And millions of American believe Trump is a man of God - if only because Americans in general are the favourites of God - just as the British once were. That's why it's okay for Trump to put thousands of Latin American children into wire caged concentration camps and out of touch with their parents.)

Oh, and all over the world, our news media tell us that the other side is evil. Yep. China is evil. Korea is evil.  And if you live in China or Korea, Americans - and Canadians and French and British - are evil.

We failed to make this a better world. (We didn't even try much, really.) As in 1939, we still live in societies ruled by greed.
(Sorry. I strayed. But let's get real. Government by greed is going to crash.)

It looks as though Trudeau is in big trouble. I could happily watch the Liberals trot into the sunset. But the alternative is the Conservatives. Or that ultimate party of twits, the United Conservatives.

Indeed, despite knowing many Conservatives and Liberals, I never met one who understood what those words meant - nor am I much enlightened by those who call themselves 'progressive' or 'United' Conservatives.

In fact, Canada is in very, very deep trouble. We have political parties which exist only to get elected.  And two of those have always been bought by 'interested' parties before the election.

The NDP? It's a party of some principal and honesty. But it's a much tamed party, much too tamed to deal with the crisis we face. The last party to have a solid and clear base of policy was the CCF which - alas - shaved much of it's principal to create the NDP.

In Canada, the U.S., Britain, other countries, to be born into the bottom 60% or so of the economic ladder is to suffer a dreadful handicap in education. The reality is not that rich kids are smarter. The reality is that being born poor is an educational handicap.

I grew up in an environment of poverty. None of my childhood friends, including me, finished high school. Nor were we expected to. When I was kicked out in grade eleven, My parents took it in stride. After all, I was already best-educated kid in my end of town. Time to get a job.

Without finishing high school, I slipped into university night courses. I still have my BA diploma. Over half of my grades were F, Did Not Write....and almost all the rest were Ds. Hey! I was now the most sophisticated of all my childhood friends.

Then, somehow, I went on to get an MA with straight As, and a PhD from one of Canada's prestige universities.

What is this blank spot that so many of us run into?

The reality, and I sensed this when I became an elementary school teacher, is that low income MADE us retarded. So how do we overcome that?

Well, for the most part, we don't even try. Kids with low grades are left to get more low grades. And all our universities are too busy looking at themselves in mirrors to give a damn about 'retarded' students.. The U.S. has gone a step further. Instead of giving the schools better training to deal with this, it is  firing teachers, and overloading classes in the public schools.

Hey. don't waste money on poor kids. No. Build pricey schools for rich kids. Problem solved. Canada does much the same. And both countries lose huge numbers of children who could become far more productive adults.

The article cited at the top of this is one that appeared in an interesting BC site called The Tyee.

March 21: I don't like this one, either. But this is reality.

This morning, I awoke early to get busy on the blog. But it wouldn't work. Most of my  text was off the screen. As well, tiny problems kept interrupting. Eventually, in desperation, I  took my computer to a repair shop. The shop keeper plugged it in. Everything was working perfectly.

So now, I'm very late---too late to finish a normal blog. So I'll try something different. For the most part, our news is put to us as an incident. Would that it were. We follow the news in a detached sort of way, buoyed by illusions of what we are and what  we can do. If only that were true....

The reality is quite different. The pessimists, of whom I am one, for the most part see our current events, as signs of a U.S. that is stretching its greed and power beyond reason. This leads to seeing current events as the sunset of America as a major power. So we become critical of its current behaviour. We see all this as a sign of imperial decline, rather like the decline of the British, French and other western colonies.

But it very well might be more than that. It might be - it might very well be - the collapse not just of a nation but of a world - rather like the fall of Rome.

For all the mythology of American history, the U.S.has, since independence and even before, been an imperial predator. It began  with the slaughter of native peoples. Indeed, George Washington was no lover of freedom for all the people. A prime reason for the American revolution was that U.S. land speculators, like Washington,  wanted to destroy all native peoples to steal their land. Britain had no interest in such an ambitious venture. Thus the declaration of independence.

Indeed, Washington's circle had no great regard for ordinary American people at all. That particularly showed itself in forbidding the vote to those of low income.

And, of course, there was no freedom for slaves. Indeed, Washington's U.S. was so greedy for slaves and so careless in its handling of them, that millions died on the way to the U.S. American history books are sometimes more than a little inaccurate in their image of America as a land of equality. And that's even allowing for its treatment of women.

Added to that,  just since 1776 'the U.S. has attacked other countries in at least some 240 years. That doesn't leave much time to be home. In short, the U.S. is probably the most aggressive nation in the world - even stretching way into the past. It is THE western power - the inheritor of a western world power that has existed for over five centuries.

We are not, then watching the decline of just another western world power. We may be watching the last days of western civilization. (Yes. I know we face the possibility of total destruction of both sides. But let's look for the 'good' side.)

Oh, how many countries have invaded the U.S. in it's history as a western nation?
What is it that justifies it's more than 200 years of mass murder?

The British attack on Washington in 1812.

That's it folks.

But the U.S. is at least a democracy. Right?

Nope.

From the start, American government was dominated by land  speculators, then by a lust to steal from the rest of the world. The American people have rarely, if ever, controlled their political leaders. And for the wealthy, the American politicians have always been servants.

The same is pretty much true in Canada. The Liberal and the Conservative parties, from the start, have been the eager servants of the wealthy. Back in 1867, the Conservatives were patsies for the big money in Montreal. The Liberals were ditto for the big money in Toronto. That may help to explain why a man who was only briefly the Conservative prime minister at the end of the 19th century was able to retire to a long life of comfortable luxury in Britain.

Now, Premier Trudeau has planted us firmly at the side of the worst, most corrupt elements in North America. And will they buy off Canadian governments? You can bet on it - and they may well be joined by Britain's and Europe's fading powers.

We may all become Americans. For a little while.

I don't think  the American university scandal is a factor in Canada. (I certainly hope not.) But it is reflected here in expensive private schools for rich kids. White nationalism is a product of the hatreds and delusions cooked up by politicians like Donald Trump. Society is looking for someone to blame for our high levels of poverty, our encouragement of disrespect for human life, our social failure. And the causes of dissatisfaction are, as always, exploited by the racists, the haters. Instead of taking the trouble to analyze our problems, these people simply turn to hatred.

And that hatred is picked up by some governments. Italy, for example, simply forbids the rescue of African war refugees fleeing to it in very dangerous and overloaded  rafts and ships.

March 17: Our Closing Days

Sorry to be late by a full day. But keep those dollars rolling in.
___________________________________________________________

https://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/mosque-shooting-social-media-1.5058496

Cracking down on hate-making web sites sounds like a good idea. Alas! It's not that simple.

There are, of course, web sites that generate hatred and racism. But some of the worst examples of hatred and racism are from our leading political figures. Donald Trump has branded Latin Americans as murderers and criminals. I don't know how often I have seen that on his twitter site. His image of all  those fleeing families and  their children  has consistently been one that they will slaughter good Americans on the street. And he has a similar image for most  migrants.

Now, Americans certainly are being slaughtered on their streets. But most are being slaughtered by good, God-fearing Americans using guns purchased  from American gun-dealers.

For political reasons, Trump has been the American image of racism and hatred. That racism and hatred is a large part of what got him elected. Racism has been a feature of American life since the revolution and earlier. It was racism that  has abused African-Americans for centuries - and still does. It was racism that justified the mass murder of native Americans. And how about the American slaughter of two hundred thousand of Maya people of Guatemala? How about the starvation of the babies of Yemen?

None of the above was caused by social media sites.

Americans also have a love of silencing the voices they don't want to hear. Just imagine ---- any social medium that any racist might hear and disagree with would become one that has to be silenced.

No. In a democracy, you have be prepared to hear opinions you don't like. It can be obnoxious. But the reality is that all societies have obnoxious people. Silencing them won't make them less dangerous.

Indeed, attempts to silence those we disagree with will make all of us the destroyers of democracy. Remember Senator Joe McCarthy? The American communist party of his day was a negligible one. But his hate campaign did most of its damage to American democracy.

I prefer to know what people think - especially people who are racists like Trump.

Well, of course democrats are messing things. The American system has always been dreadfully corrupt. And Democrats and Republicans have usually been the same people. Much as I respect those democrats trying to bring honesty to the party - the reality is that party has a lot of deadwood that's indistinguishable from the Republicans.
_______________________________________________________________

My, this has been a depressing one to write. In the face of the most destructive weapons we have ever seen, we seem determined to use the things. This is madness. No-one can even guess at the destructiveness of some 10,000 to 15.000 nuclear weapons of current power levels. This should be something to warn us against any future war. Instead, we have leaders who think of nothing but war - and have the idiocy to claim anybody would win it.

The worst war maniac of post-World War Two is the U.S. It has killed at least, at the very least, 20 million people. And it calls on God to bless it all.

We are putting our children into a world of increasing hatreds, increasing greed, and increasing danger.

Look, all you greedy, moron billionaires, there are things we cannot have because we will not survive them. War is at the top of the list. It's not an option. It's suicide pact.

Nor can we afford the killing we inflict on Latin America, the middle east, most of Africa to satisfy the unsatisfiable greed of our billionaires.

Nor can we afford the greed that causes our own wealthy to constantly steal from us. At least 50,000,000 Americans and Canadian live in poverty - and that means the really deep poverty. And that number has been rising through our 'good times'. The story that capitalism creates wealth for us all is a crock. In fact, it is steadily getting worse and the share of greed and irresponsibility continues.

But don't worry. There is every possibility that that situation will collapse as  war destroys us all.

We had our great chance to create a world of opportunity and peace in 1945. But the super-greedy among us wouldn't permit that. They quickly stepped up more killing in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, the U.S.mass murders in Panama, Guatemala, Haiti, Chile,... and they called on God to stamp approval on their greed and killing.

There is a dead-end coming, quite probably within 20 years, more probably even less.

We cannot survive what we are doing. We had it right in 1945. We told our service people we were going to create a world of peace. We didn't do it. The greedy wouldn't allow a world of peace.

We now have very little time to save ourselves. We have get angry. We have to get determined. We have to scare the hell out of most of those wretches we call politicians and their bosses we call economic leaders.

We have drifted into a world of abuse, mass murder and boundless greed. And we have produced political disasters like Donald Trump (and most of the post-1945 presidents since him.) And Canada has kicked in with the 'utterly-without-brains or morality'  Doug Ford.

We have surrendered power and leadership to the worst people in the world. And we have only now to stop them.

March 14:This VERY Dangerous Time

https://www.guardian.com/commentisfree/2019/mar/12/us-college-admissions-scandal-corruption-rigged

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/us-college-scam-court-cheating-1.5055097

Some universities have always been places of privilege and snobbery. That doesn't mean they are good. It's just snobbery. It can run very deep - throughout the whole administration and and faculty. The universities - American and Canadian - are powerfully affected, too -by the wealthy who sit on their boards.

Result? Many an esteemed university is not better than the others. It's just more snobbish. In Canada, this tendency is boosted by a popular magazine which runs an annual special edition which purports to rank Canadian universities by quality of education. But these rankings essentially reflect the snobbery of universities in judging themselves.

N.B. The American universities have known about this scam all along and university administrators have fully accepted it.

An item I missed almost a month ago is  that Donald Trump says that Maduro of Venezuela has to go because he is a socialist.

Well, for openers, Maduro is many things. But a socialist isn't one of them. He predecessor was - but not Maduro. As well, I seriously doubt whether Trump knows what a socialist is. But Trump made it all worse. He says that the U.S. cannot permit socialists to come to power. By strong implication, he has the right
to invade countries that vote socialist - you know, dangerous things like medicare, housing for the poor, public education.....

He has the right to invade countries like that...? Yes. In Trump's world, he has the right to attack countries whose politics he doesn't agree with.

So much for democracy.

In passing, I am a socialist. No, that does not mean massacring them by millions. No. That is what we call capitalism. My socialism is one that demands, as a start, that government exists to serve all, beginning with the poorest, and working our way up. That, and not killing people, is what patriotism is about.

A hundred and twenty years ago, Canadians died in a war in South Africa that had nothing to do with Canada. The died because of patriotism - sort of. They died because Britain wanted a precedent that in future, Canadians would routinely fight British wars because, well, because we were patriotic and sang God Save the King.

That's why thousands of Canadian died in World War  1. (No. It wasn't because the Germans of 1914 were evil. In fact, the British had a record of murder and plunder far, far worse had a record far, far more evil than German did.

And so, at the age of six, I learned to sing God Save the King and 'pledge allegiance to THIS flag, the Union Jack....' and the old boys of my father's scout troop would drop in to say goodbye as they headed to the war - soon to be joined by my father.

Oh, yes, Hitler was evil. But he was kid stuff compared to the record of the British Empire - or the growing American empire.

Anyway, Canada soon after the war dropped the Union Jack and  God Save the King (Queen) schtick (schtick is your Yiddish word for the day).  To be patriotic now meant to fight wars for the U.S. - as in Korea, Afghanistan, Libya and (quietly) in Syria and Eastern Europe. It is now as if we saluted the Star-Spangled Banner in the morning as we kiss Trump's rear end in supporting his imperial attack on Venezuela. (In practice, patriotism means doing whatever our current imperialist wants us to do.)

For those of us who once sang Rule Britannia, the words now mean nothing. Indeed, Britain is now  on the edge of an economic collapse that could well mean the breakup of Britain into England, Scotland and an enlarged Ireland.

But who gives a damn? We now owe our patriotism to America which, I am reasonably informed, is blessed by God.

What does patriotism mean? As always, it means obedience to whoever is boss at the time.

We have, maybe, a dozen years to deal with this. But in both Canada and the U.S. action is virtually barred as the wealthy buy off the Liberals and the Conservatives, and in he U.S. they buy off Republicans and many of the Democrats.

Think of that. Your children and grandchildren - and quite possible you - are likely to die because of the greed  and stupidity of billionaires. We have, maybe, a dozen years. And the very wealthy are doing ---nothing. Instead of starving children to death in Yemen, this is the war we should be fighting.
_________________________________________________________________
https://countercurrents.org/2019/03/14/parenting-the-climate-change-generation-or-will-they-parent-us/

I applaud the children for what they are doing. But we don't have time for them to do it. We  have allowed the very wealthy to make all decisions for us. I know of no evidence that the wealthy are intellectually gifted. In the province of New Brunswick where I lived for some years, the leading billionaire is a man who inherited his money - and whose education would not qualify him to be a senior clerk in any company. But Mr. Irving has billions, owns all the newspapers in his province, owns the Liberals and Conservatives...and routinely rips off  the budget of the province to get government donations to himself.

I have seen no evidence that our economic leaders are of anything more than very average intelligence. And they are of no social or moral understanding at all. And these are the people who control our futures.

Our world has always had such a social class.-, one that kept most of society in poverty to enrich themselves. And much of that is our fault. We are timid. We fear being different.

But now,  time is running out. We are fearful. Our economic leadership is greedy and unintelligent.

Wake up.

Trump bafflegab of the month. Some weeks ago, Trump announced he was withdrawing troops from Syria because the rebels (Isis, etc.) had been defeated. But, duh, for several years the US has been the one SUPPORTING the rebels. It has armed them, equipped them, funded them.

Then he announced a pause in the withdrawal.

Now, he has resumed some some bombing of the Syrians - to help the rebels that he said he had defeated.

We are in very great danger of a world war - soon. The chances of anybody winning it are very, very poor. In fact, they are zero.

The U.S. is run by a gang of idealogues. It is, by far, the most dangerous gang we have ever seen. Nor does it have even some sense of values to be preserved. It exists only to rage - with no concern whatever for the needs of the American people.

At this point, it may well be that the only hope for the rest of us - and for the U.S. - is a second American revolution.

March 12: A Bad Day

This will be very much a hit and or miss  blog. Two days ago, I came down with the ultimate cold. Sleep has been almost impossible for two days. So I'm not sure how quickly (or if) I'll get anything done today.
______________________________________________________________
I grew up in a poor district. Most of may friends were illiterate. Only one person in my grade one class finished public school. I, alas, was not the one. I was kicked out in grade 11.When I told my parents, they were not concerned about it. It was simply time to find a job, and I met my parents highest expectations when I became an office mail boy.

As it happened, there were  miracles, and I became a teacher at all levels from grade school to university. And there was no doubt that the poor kids had a tougher time. And  the rich ones?

I learned about that as a BA student - a degree I finished so badly it was an embarrassment - and one that made life very tough for me when I applied to do an MA. My parents were very upset. I was trying to rise above my station.

https://www.alternet.org/2016/06/there-huge-education-gap-between-poor-students-and-their-wealthier-peers-what-needs-be-done/

One important lesson was learned from my grade school teaching experience.  University professors should learn how to teach.

Oh, are the American charter schools the answer? Forget it. These are simply private schools that poor people can't afford to go to.

We are living in what is possibly the greatest period of super greed in history. All common sense goes out the window. The reality is that oil barons will die, too. Yes, they will. And they will take us with them.
______________________________________________________________

There is no end to Washington wars. It is determined to conquer the world. Indeed, it has been carrying out wars constantly since 1950 - many of them unreported. That is largely what has reduced the middle east and Latin America
 into a hell-hole.

There are no limits to greed. - and greed of American corporations is what this is all about. It's pure greed. They have so much money it can never be spent. But they still want more. They are siphoning money from all the millions of the rest of us. And it will never be enough.

Is it possible that anybody gives a damn about what any Canadian political party thinks? None of  them has confronted any of the huge problems that face us. No. Not even the NDP. We have monster climate problems that are crashing down on us while we do nothing much of anything. We have become the U.S. bum boy for Latin America.

We live in a world as evil as anything Hitler could have contrived. We have long since given up on updating our social programmes. We have been robbed blind by multi-billionaires who have stolen the taxes they should have paid to us, the money that should  have  gone to housing, education, health care, climate change....money that has, quite simply, been stolen by our 'most respectable' citizens.
