Jan. 10: Somewhere over the rainbow....

In this story,  note, among other things, the pictures of 'homes'

We wouldn't dream of making our wealthy live in these conditions. Nor would we dream of making the wealthy pay taxes so that most Canadians could live better lives.

Tell me all about the joys of capitalism. Tell me how we are all so lucky as to have billionaires running our governments.

I hesitated before including the following story. I hesitated because it did not say who had caused the following situation. As it is, it could mean to readers that the government of Venezuela caused this - and that would support the approaching U.S. invasion of Venezuela. In fact, there are childen like this all over Central America - and their suffering has a lot to do with international corporations.

The great problem of democracy is that the issues are great and demanding - but the public incapable of keeping up with them, and the news media - well - not as reliable and informative as they should be. And, in fairness, the mass and complexity of what we need to know  surpasses the general capacity of following events.

How many people know that Bolsanaro of Brazil and Netanyahu of  Israel are buddies?

https://countercurrents.org/2019/01/10/when-bolsonaro-and-netanyahu-are-brothers-why-brazil-should-shun-the-israeli-model/

It's hard to imagine anyone who cares less for Judaic principles than Netanyahu -  unless it's Bolsanaro.

The language of this item is extreme - but it's true enough. The only reservation I have is its suggestion this is new. We humans have always behaved this way. Think Columbus. Think the U.S. slaughter of its native peoples. Think the behaviour of every empire in history.

footnote -  It's true, as this article says, that what Russia Times prints is usually truthful - more so than most news media. The catch is that it altogether avoids reporting on stories that make Russia look bad. It tells the truth. But not the whole truth.

For almost 20 years, I lived in a province in which the local billionaire was poisoning the land, the animals and the people with chemicals. When the doctor who was the province's health chief attacked this, she was fired. So the billionaire is still poisoning the land and the people - and the people are still voting for the billionaire's political patsy.

There is a major war brewing - and happening - against journalistic criticism of our news media - the kind of criticism aimed at sources like facebook. It was just weeks ago that the warning shots came from the owners of facebook that they were closing down the site to news media they didn't approve of. (and this was reported and applauded by all the newspapers of New Brunswick - among other places - which are all owned by the same billionaire.) Watch for increasing pressure on what we are allowed to read.

When Hitler used child soldiers in 1944-45, it was digusting. But when Saudi Arabia does it  (with U.S. money) our news media are largely silent. The world is all in a huffy tiz becamse the Saudia prince murdered a Saudi reporter. But it doesn't care that the U.S. and Saudi Arabia are slaughtering civilians in Yemen with weapons and money supplied by the west.

In 1918, we ended the war to end all wars. Then we did it again in 1945. Since then, we  have constantly been at war to end all wars. But it's not happening. And it's not going to happen. Wars, as usual, are fought for the pure greed - gluttony - of our class of the very wealthy. We are so accustomed to that that we give no thought to the reality that we are starving and destroying societies all over the world. We kill children by the millions.

We have, of course, always done that. In modern times that's, what capitalism has been all about. Though our news media never told us, that's what world wars one and two were really about. That's what Korea and Vietnam and the middle east and Afghanistan have been about, and the mass murder in Central American countries like Guatemala.. That's what the massive use of torture is about.

And where will this take us?

In the short term, this will take us to the economic and social collapse of the U.S. but with a rather tricky stage on the way when capitalists decide whether the U.S. should be for nuclear war before it's too late.

There has been almost no international effort to deal with this. The UN went into the scrap  heap in just a few years after its founding.  Here, in North America - as in Europe - we are really governed by billionaires who have no social values at all, who understand only greed. The result of this, since 1945, has been intense suffering even in the rich countries as billionaires bleed all nations including their own for private profit.

"Theyr'll  be love and laughter and peace ever after" sang Vera Lynn. But it hasn't happened, and there is no sign it's going to.

The only people who can stop that are----us. But we haven't shown much interest in that. Have we?

We need much more practical politicians with far, far more effective proposals. As it is, we have Liberals and Conservatives who aren't even decorative, much less having any sense of what is needed. We need a general public that is far, far better informed. This is a process we should have begun in 1918. We now have very little time to wake up.

Late Supplement to the news.

Canada has just joined its American master to cut off relations with Venezuela.  It will support the U.S. invasion of that country to make American oil billionaires happy - and at least one Canadian one.

The question now is will Canada be so obedient as to join the pending invasion?
Quite possible so - though Trudeau might show an uncommon burst of intelligence. A likely possibility is that he will avoid criticism by declining to take part in the invasion - but will kiss up to the U.S. by entering after the fighting as a 'peacekeeping' force.

It's always hard to decide whether to be a bully or a wimp.

Is Canada likely to break relations with Guatemala because it's government was created by the U.S. who did it my murdering opponents of U.S. rule?

No. The Canadian government prefers kissing the American ass rather than kicking it.
